Parts of a Plant – Flowers

| Posted in Uncategorized

The four main parts of a plant are the roots, the stem, the leaves and the flowers.

Each part has a set of jobs to do to keep the plant healthy.

  • The roots absorb water and minerals from the soil and anchor the plant in the ground.
  • The stem supports the plant above ground, and carries the water and minerals to the leaves.
  • The leaves make food for the plant.

What is the job of the flowers?  Listen to this video to find out:

Flowers have a special job. The flower makes seeds.

Pollination is a very important part of the life cycle of plants.   Plants cannot make seeds unless they are pollinated.

What is pollination?

Pollination is when pollen, a sticky yellow powder, is carried from one plant to another by insects, birds, and small mammals, such as honeybees, ants, beetles, butterflies, moths, hummingbirds and bats.

Flowers attract animals by the colours of the petals and their smell.

Flowers also make nectar, a sugary liquid, that animals like to eat.

When a flower has been pollinated, it makes seeds.  The seeds can make new plants.
