February 2015 – Ms Gourlay's Class

Month: February 2015

Division 10 has been working in the computer lab.  We have been using an educational program called Kidspiration.   Kidspiration is a tool that strengthens student writing skills.  Div. 10 learned how to create a web in order to organize the information that we learned about black bears.  Then, we converted our web to a sentence writing view.  Finally, we published our work.

Division 10 uses technology, not only to improve our reading and writing skills, but also to help clarify thoughts, organize information, apply new knowledge and build critical thinking skills.  Technology is great, but it should be used thoughtfully and purposely.

Polar Problem

Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot. Nothing is going to get better.  It’s not. – Dr. Seuss

The polar bears of Churchill must overcome bitter cold and hunger to survive.  Today, they face a new threat – global warming.  Div. 10 learned that global warming is the gradual rise in the surface temperature of the earth.  One of the main causes is the buildup of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.  The warmer temperatures cause the ice on Hudson Bay to thaw earlier in the spring and freeze later in the fall.  When this happens, the bears have less time to hunt and eat.   Polar bears must look for their food elsewhere  – this can lead to more encounters between people and bears![metaslider id=1951]

When it comes to the problem of global warming, there is no one solution.  But everyone can help by using energy wisely.  Div. 10 decided to turn out the lights when we leave the room, and ask to walk to school more often.

Can you think of other ways that people can help?
