Goodbye November…..

The month of November feels like it just flew by.Goodbye November Hello December | Hello december quotes ... With many short weeks and lots of fun activities December has arrived in a flash. 2,869 Working Together Clipart Images, Stock Photos, 3D ... As we wrap up the term and prepare for the next, we are working on a number of interesting projects. You are busy building your unique schools, creating visual conclusions in Science and researching your genres like mad for Literacy. It is amazing to see you all so engaged, focused and excited. We are really enjoying our time with you Division 6. You are a wonderful bunch!

In Math, the grade 5’s have been busy practicing their division skills, which, as you know, is also practicing your multiplication skills. Next Wednesday, we will have our Multiplication/Division unit test. free student testing cartoons | Royalty Free Cartoon Clipart ...You will have some time on Monday and Tuesday to review and practice in class before the test so you can ask any of your questions or work with friends to review all that we have been doing this unit.

In Social Studies, our study of international festivals and traditions continued this week.  We reviewed what we have learned about Diwali, Hannukah, and Kwanzaa through a game called “KABOOM”.  Over the weekend you should study those 3 festivals and get ready for our quiz on them next Friday!  Any of the Kaboom questions can be on that quiz!! Pub Quiz PNG, Clipart, Computer Icons, Download, Finger, Freepik Company Hq, Hand Free PNG Download The Kaboom game is available for you to play during the week if you wanted to brush up a bit more before Friday.  The festival we looked at this week was CHRISTMAS!! Christmas Around the World Books for Classroom StaycationWe watched a video and learned that Christmas is celebrated by many cultures all around the world and in a variety of ways.  We did our Graph of the Week around the Christmas traditions we have in our homes.  Some of the options were: decorating the outside of our homes, setting up a Christmas tree, doing special baking or crafting, going to see holiday events, and visiting Santa.  christmas-tree-cliparts-simple-1-original - The Township of MelancthonWhat we discovered was that a huge majority of our class not only celebrates Christmas but also engage in at least one or more of those traditions.  Which traditions have you already done as part of your Christmas preparations?

One Christmas tradition that happens at schools quite often is doing a SECRET SANTA gift exchange and you all were very excited to keep that tradition going this year in our class as well!  One thing that we had to decide on was the BUDGET we’d like to stay within.  After a few suggestions were made, we took a vote and we landed on $15.  We did say that this could change based on what families felt was reasonable.  Remember, this is optional, so discuss this with your parents and make a final decision if you want to take part in this or not.  Christmas Clipart-christmas wish list 2bNext week, we’ll set aside time to fill out a “wish list” and do our Secret Santa draw.  We’ll have our Secret Santa gift exchange on the last day before the holidays which is Thursday, December 21st.

The Winter Concert is also being held next week. We will be rehearsing and watching on Wednesday and Thursdays.350+ Kids Christmas Concert Illustrations, Royalty-Free ... your families will be invited to watch during the day on Friday. Our performance for families is between recess and lunch that day. Your costumes should be a red or white top with black or dark bottoms please. Please make sure you have them with you on Friday so our class looks great up there on stage!

Your blog response is this:

Have you discussed our Secret Santa plans with your parents?  Do your parents feel that $15 is a reasonable budget or should it be lower? Based on your discussion with your parents, are you going to participate in our Secret Santa gift exchange?

We MUST have your response in order for you to participate in this activity…

Short week, AGAIN?!?!?

Yes, yes, another short week and you know what that means……another jam packed week. monday to friday Stock Vector | Adobe StockWe fit into 4 days what we normally do in 5! As always, we are very proud of all your hard work and focus all week long. We are so impressed by all of you!

The week started off with a new experience for us first thing on Monday morning. We had a fun outing to Michael J. Fox Theatre at Burnaby South High School. We joined Seaforth school to watch a performance from Kutapira, an African drumming band. African Musical Instruments Clip ArtThe band played us a mixture of percussion instruments that make up their unique sound, from the Zimbabwean marimba’s to the West African djembe to the Afro-cuban conga’s and timbales to the drum kit which provides a steady driving groove. IMG_2436.JPGWe clapped along to the wonderful rhythms and you were a wonderful audience. For our first time in a theatre together, we were really impressed with how engaged you all were. Most interesting to us was that the group learned their instruments and music right here in Vancouver when they were just teenagers.

We have begun to wrap up our unit on life systems by creating a “Visual Conclusion”. Using what we know are important components of a summary, we are sharing what we learned in a more visual way. Strathmore Visual Watercolor Journal Review — Scratchmade JournalRather then just writing what we learned, we are adding visuals to communicate what we have learned, connections between ideas, and describe our understanding. It is still in the early stages, however, from what we have seen so far, these are going to be very interesting and unique. This week you were also handed a criteria/rubric to help you ensure you are including all the key elements to demonstrate your learning in the best most thorough way possible.

Our reading fluency is continuing to develop as we read new articles with new partners each time we meet. We always read for one minute and we always get two chances at the same passage. Parents • Page - ARROWWOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOLMany of you are working on similar goals. You want to read smoothly, at a good pace while paying attention to punctuation. There has definitely been some improvement and the feedback you are giving each other has been very helpful. Would you agree?

Tuesday morning was another new experience for us. We had an online workshop come to us via “ZOOM” from Science World. Bacteria Clipart Free Graphic by Free Graphic Bundles ...The workshop was all about Bacteria and Artificial Intelligence. It was a technology focused workshop that was able to mix together learning about bacteria with learning about “chat bots”.Chatbot Clipart Images | Free Download | PNG Transparent ...I had never worked with a Chat Bot before, had you? You all seemed to enjoy being on your computers, answering surveys, and learning alongside each other in this new way.

This week you were introduced to a new project we will be starting next week with a focus on Literacy. You are each going to choose a Genre to research. You will have a lot of time to research your genre here at school and collect all your information. From there, you are going to create a poster and a 3-5 minute oral presentation to share your genre with the class. Literary Genres Cartoon Clipart for ALL grades | Literary genre, Cartoon clip art, Funny smsWe are hoping this will be a way to expand your reading horizons. Many of you are stuck reading the same author or type of book. If we learn about other genres and authors that are out there, we may try out some new books in the future. Make sure you give some thought about what genre you want to research as we will be starting on Monday. Don’t forget, the goal is to learn about a genre you do not already read!

Our tour of international festivals and traditions continued this week with an introduction to Hanukkah and Kwanzaa.  Hanukkah Begins – P.S.62 The Kathleen Grimm School for Leadership and Sustainability at Sandy GroundThe plan had been to work in small groups to watch some videos and take notes as a group; however, our technology wasn’t cooperating and with the wifi lagging and LOOOONG log in times, our session was cut short and we didn’t get what we hoped to accomplish done in the way that was intended.

95 Kwanzaa clipart - Graphics FactorySo, on to “Plan B”… which involved all of us watching the same two videos ( one about each festival) and we took some notes as a class.  Your homework is to go over the text, highlight any other information you think is important, and finish the last two boxes of your recording sheet.  The videos are available on TEAMS, so if you want to watch all of them, you are absolutely able to do that!  There are some similarities between both of these festivals as well as several aspects that are unique to each.  Can you think of any of those?

Hot glue gun - Free miscellaneous iconsWe spent Thursday afternoon continuing with our unique schools building.  All of you are so engaged  and have been busy cutting, gluing, painting, and creating using a variety of materials.Craft Supplies Clipart Images | Free Download | PNG Transparent Background - Pngtree Your projects certainly are coming along, and more and more progress is evident after each session of building.  Time is ticking away…  with only  THREE more sessions of building before we set up our gallery and share these with each other and maybe another class or two??

YOUR BLOG RESPONSE QUESTIONS FOR THIS WEEKEND ARE……

  1. TELL US WHAT YOU THOUGHT OF KUTAPIRA AND THEIR MUSIC.
  2. TELL US TWO OR MORE THINGS YOU LEARNED FROM THE SCIENCE WORLD WORKSHOP.

We hope you enjoy your long weekend everyone. Rest up, next week is a full one!!!!

Looking back and moving forward

We made it through another short week.Busy Week | PE1-7 @ Sgoil an Iochdair These short weeks seem to go by super fast because they are so jam packed with work to make up for the day we missed. Do you feel that way too?

Most of the work you have been doing in Math and Science with Mrs. Gil is just continuing to practice and improve upon skills we have been exploring. We have been working on Multiplication and Division in Math and we are wrapping up our exploration of Life Systems. Keep Going PNG, Vector, PSD, and Clipart With Transparent Background for Free Download | PngtreeWe have really been trying to improve our clarity when writing about science facts and summarizing information into our own words.  It seems that with time, practice and review, you are all developing your understanding and skills nicely in both areas.

We are working a lot on reflecting and goal setting as we wind down term one and get ready for term 2.  Did you set goals in these areas after writing your self reflections last week? How are your goals coming along anyway? 42,600+ Setting Goals Illustrations, Royalty-Free Vector ...Does your family know what your goals are? Can they help you stay on track and find time to work on them? Families can be great tools to help us reach our goals, give it a try!

The building has begun on our ‘unique schools’ project!  Thursday and Friday afternoon were buzzing with the excitement that comes with collaboration, sharing ideas, trying things out, and making your ideas come to life!  The progress is already incredible and it’s very exciting to see how engaged you all are in this process!  We’ll have next week and then only two more building sessions before we need to have our projects ready for the gallery walk!  Remember, if there are materials that you find at home and you feel you could use in your project, bring them!  We are so looking forward to seeing what your final projects look like!  Happy building!

What is the difference between routines and traditions?  Pin on Daily routinesRoutines are things that are frequently and consistently.  These can be daily, or multiple times a day!  Traditions, on the other hand, are much less frequent and are things that are done that have been handed down from one generation to another.   After some brainstorming, we noticed that traditions usually are connected to celebrations or special occasions! The importance of Family, Culture and Community – EDP3273 Final Group Project 2And so began our mini Social Studies unit on international traditions.  The first festival/tradition we looked at was Diwali.  12,900+ Diwali Lamp Illustrations, Royalty-Free Vector Graphics & Clip Art - iStock | Holding diwali lampThis is a festival that actually just took place and is celebrated mainly by people from India.  We learned a bunch of things and also had the bonus to hear from Mrs. Simar ( one of our EA’s) who celebrates Diwali every year!  We also collected some data surrounding festivals/traditions that WE celebrate in our ‘graph of the week’.  Our data showed some interesting things!  Almost ( if not all) of the class has traditions around Christmas and birthdays and there was also a big group that have traditions around “other” occasions too.  It’ll be fun to explore some festivals that NONE of us have traditions around and find out what those are and how they are celebrated.

Looking ahead, there is a lot to be excited about for next week.  On Monday, we have our first Young People’s Concert. We will be listening to a percussion band with African influences from right here in Vancouver! Djembe African Percussion | Vector art design, Vector art ... An important note to you and your families is that our time to leave Brentwood Park that day is 9:00 am SHARP!  We have to be at the Michael J. Fox Theatre for 9:30 show start time. We will not be able to wait for anyone so if you do not arrive on time you will have to stay back at the school and wait for us to return. Please be at school at least ten minutes before 9 so we can let you into the classroom early and get ready to board the bus.  THANK YOU!

On Tuesday, we will be having a Science World in class Field experience.  We will have an online virtual experience with one of the scientists from Science World in the morning. At 9:30am, the instructor will zoom into our classroom via wifi and projector and we will be on our own computers at the same time. The instructor is then going to give us a 1 hour workshop about Bacteria…….Bacteria Clipart Images - Free Download on Freepik I wonder if we will be able to connect what we learn to what we have been learning about the Life Systems of plants, animals, and humans?  We cannot wait to find out!

Next week is also another short week! Can you believe it!  On Friday November 24th, while you all sleep in and enjoy a day off, teachers will be here at school working on our own goals. What is Collaboration? – SPENCER BURTONWe will come together as a big group and reflect about what we have been doing in our classes to work on goals we set together earlier this year. See, you are not the only ones who goal set! Adults do it all the time too.  Learning doesn’t stop friends, it is a life long journey so enjoy it!

Here is your Blog response for this weekend:

What are 3 things you learned about Diwali?

Remember and Reflect

This week was one spent reflecting and remembering. We spent some time each day thinking about how we have been growing and changing over these first few months of schoolPin on Clipart für ABs for worksheets. We have asked you to take time to think about your strengths and stretches. We have also asked you to set goals and plan how you are going to achieve them. As the week came to an end, we were asked to remember the soldiers who have served our country to bring us the peace we enjoy in our daily lives. Free Veteran and Remembrance Day Clip ArtDo your brains hurt? They should, that is a lot of deep thinking going on!

When we started talking about goals last week, we discussed how important “perserverence” can be when we find things challenging. We set goals for ourselves using SMART thinking. We made goals for ourselves that were

Specific, Measurable , Achievable, Realistic and Timely. It is important to remember that you always want to set goals for yourself that are really going to help you improve but also, are goals that you will be able to achieve. The way to ensure you will be successful is to be really clear on what you want to do (specific) and make sure there is a plan (time and place) for when you are going to work on that goal.Parent Tips] Goal Setting with Your Child | Edmentum Blog If you can master the art of creating achievable and realistic goals for yourselves, you will all be successful at whatever you put your minds to!

We were busy in science this week.  The systems we covered this week were:

Movement, Protection, Circulation, and Digestion.

We challenged you all to work on reading the information in front of you and summarizing it into short, clear, scientific notes. Scientist writing notes on table Royalty Free Vector ImageThis is still a challenge for some of you but as we practice and share our work with one another, we are learning how to make sure we are using scientific vocabulary in our work, to synthesize what we are learning into clear statements. While this week we did all our work in small groups to help each other and learn from each other, next week you will be asked to demonstrate you summarizing skills independently. We know you have practiced these skills and are ready to tackle the next two systems, circulation and senses, on your own!

Two heads are better than one.” – English Proverb | Free English Materials For You“Two heads are better than one”, and “None of us is as smart as all of us”, are both  very true statements and we certainly made use of each others’ learning around The Dr. David Suzuki Public School.  In preparation for our assessment on Friday, we had the opportunity to study together in small groups as we worked through a collection of activities.  We had to illustrate text, define vocabulary in context, write captions, and recall what we learned about the school. Children share ideas Stock Photos, Royalty Free Children share ideas Images | Depositphotos Working together REALLY helped us remember some of the smaller details that we may have already forgotten.  On Friday, when we saw the ACTUAL quiz, we were quite surprised to see that it was EXACTLY the same as the ‘buddy study” activity! NOW we know what Mrs. Davis meant when she said she was “setting us up for success”!

Our study of unique schools has entered its next phase!  We have compared and compiled our research with our group members and are now on the ADST portion of our project. Vector Illustration Of Creative Thinking Stock Clipart | Royalty-Free | FreeImages ADST stands for “Applied Design, Skills, and Technology”.  Regarding this project, we are focusing on the “design” aspect of ADST in that we are designing a 3-D model of the unique school we researched.  Thinking, Blueprint, Architecture, Drawing, Plan, Interior Design Services, Design Thinking, Blockchain transparent background PNG clipart | HiClipartOn Friday we spent a good portion of our afternoon planning what our model will look like, what materials we will need to build it, and sketching and drawing some initial ideas of what we’re imagining.  This is an important step and one that might change as we get into the actual building of our model.  Start collecting the items you need for building, because next week, once your plan has been approved, your team can get started!

Math continues to be all about Multiplication. Many of you have got your basic facts memorized and are getting through your mad minute drills with time to spare, well done! Some of you still need to be practicing those facts at home because3,502 Multiplication Clipart Images, Stock Photos, 3D objects, & Vectors | Shutterstock knowing those facts and being able to recall them efficiently is going to help you as you move onto the upper grades. Do not forget there is a times table chart in your planners to help you if you need it. Maybe this could be an academic goal for some of you next week?Blog Archives - Mrs. Miller All of you have shown you know how do multiply 1×1 and 2×1 digit multiplication problems and we are now moving on to practice 2 and 3 by 1 or 2 digit multiplication problems. Once we have practiced those skills, we will be turning our attention over to division. Most of you already know that division is just the opposite of multiplication so, if you have memorized your times tables up to 12, division is going to be a snap for you!  We added a few more games to our skill reinforcement collection as well.  We played “Multiplication Scramble” “T-Ball multiplication”, and “High Times/Low Times” in small groups.  These are games you could teach your family and play at home too… how about teaching them one over the long weekend?

Every other week we get to visit with our buddies, so this week was our chance to see them again. We continued to work on our buddy books with them so we can learn about each other. Also, we are starting to model reading with them and it is going to be one of our jobs to help them practice their letter sounds. Buddy Reading Clipart - Buddies Clipart - Free Transparent PNG Clipart Images DownloadIt is so wonderful seeing you all be so kind and warm with the K’s. Joy and Pain

This week was spit into two very distinct ideas. The first half of the week we were full of excitement and JOY Joy Stock Illustrations, Cliparts and Royalty Free Joy Vectorsas we celebrated Halloween with  sweet treats and costume fun while the second half of the week was much more somber.  We went from playing games with our friends and enjoying laughs and candy to discussions about war and the PAIN wars cause.Word Pain Stock Illustrations – 8,523 Word Pain Stock Illustrations, Vectors & Clipart - Dreamstime Remembrance Day is coming up this month and so we are thinking about how lucky we are to live in such a peaceful place and showing gratitude for those who fought with their lives to give that to us.  Lest We Forget Stock Illustrations, Cliparts and Royalty ...All the while, we know that right now, in our world, there are several devastating wars happening where innocent children and civilians just like us, are caught in the middle and are definitely not living in peace. So many emotions wrapped up in one week!

We did some “writing in role” on Thursday and Friday and had to imagine ourselves as a Remembrance Day Poppy.  We worked in groups to brainstorm how a poppy would respond to the following prompts:  ” I am… ; I represent…; I am seen…; I fear…; I wonder…; and I hope for…”  Using our collection of responses, we each wrote our own poem entitled “I Am a Poppy” and these poems are the newest page on our living “growth portfolio” bulletin board.  Our Friday volunteer, Kiara, taught us on how to make to make tissue paper poppies for our Remembrance Day wreath.  Our wreath will be put on display at our assembly next Friday to honour the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives for our freedom and for those who are still serving to protect it.

In Literacy discussions this week, we talked a lot about how to inference about character’s  feelings and motivations. 119,776 Emotions Clipart Images, Stock Photos, 3D objects, & Vectors | Shutterstock Feelings can be illustrated by the author through descriptions of body language, facial expressions and even words. For example, if someone is jumping up and down yelling “Yippee1”. it is a strong inference to guess the character is happy.  When inferencing about motivation, things get a little more complex. Motivation is a larger idea that explains the WHY someone is behaving the way they are or feeling the way they are.  We shared how some times of motivators can be money, ambition, acceptance, love, friendship etc.  Team of happy employees winning award Team of happy employees winning award and celebrating success. Math has been all about basic facts and the 10’s rule.  Multiplying by 10Multiplying by multiples of 10’s is pretty easy, as long as you know your basic facts! Keep working on those basic facts everyone!

Our Graph of the Week explored the question: If you were not allowed screen time, what would you do in your spare time?  No Screen Time - Marmita Da Lu - Free Transparent PNG ...Most of the class opted for playing a board or card game while a bunch of us also thought of other activities such as doing a sport, going swimming, or baking.  All great options! In science this week, we learned about basic reproduction in animals, plants and humans. We compared the three and found that there are many similarities and a few differences in how reproduction works in each. BIRTHDAY BONANZA

Happy Birthday Clipart Images - Free Download on FreepikThis week has been filled with birthdays it seems. Olivia this past weekend and Howard and Daryl this week.  Happy Birthday to all of you! It sure is nice to spend the week celebrating such happy occasions.

After several short weeks in a row, we finally got to spend an entire week together. We started the week by diving deeper into developing our inferencing skills. It is great that we are focusing on because being strong at inferencing can help us in all our studies. For example, inferencing involves being a bit of a detective,Inference Activities Part 1: Hands on Activities – Perkins School for the Blind looking for clues in the text to help us understand what we are reading. Being a detective and using clues is also an important skill as a scientist. When we are studying science, we often have questions that we are trying to answer. Often times, we must come up with a hypothesis (educated guess) before we begin testing and researching to find the answers. We have to make inferences using our background knowledge and through more reading in order to move forward in our exploration of topics. Being a reading detective is a skill we need and use all the time.

Way To Go - ClipArt BestCongratulations everyone!  All of the oral presentations have been done!  We’re still looking forward to hearing one more, but Kendrick has been away lately so he hasn’t been able to share about himself yet.  All of you did very well!  It is pretty intimidating to speak in front of such a large group of your peers, but you all handled it beautifully!  It was lovely to hear all of you encouraging your classmates by providing positive and constructive feedback after each presentation. Way to go!

Scientific Method for Young Learners Posters by Tiny Smiles | TPTWe rounded out our work with the scientific method by talking about some important vocabulary that we need to understand in order to be successful in our experimenting.  We used our gummy worm experiment as a model and figured out what these terms meant:

Dependent variable, Independent Variable, Constant Variable, Qualitative data, and Quantitative DataScience Variables Poster by Sensible Science | TPT

These are parts of all experiments and are key vocabulary terms to understand if you want your experiment to be valid. Our next topic of investigation in science will be comparing human, plant, and animal life systems. We have begun to collect information/notes and are comparing them one system at a time.

Our Unique School research has begun! We used The David Suzuki Public School as our model to collect information and take notes. Off To Class — Susan Hughes Using the text from Off to Class by Susan Hughes we read to find out the 5 w’s behind the school  (Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How). Our inferencing practice is also coming in handy as we read, because many of those answers aren’t explicitly written on the page… there’s some digging involved. Kids computer class Vectors & Illustrations for Free Download | Freepik Now we’re all in groups of 2 or 3 and have a unique school that we are learning about and collecting information on.  By next week, we are aiming to have all our research completed so that we can compare our notes with our team members and write a description about the school researched.

Multiplication Strategies Poster / Graphic Organizer | Math methods, Math lessons, Learning mathIn Math we are continuing to have daily practice of subtraction with borrowing and multiplication drills. Once those are complete, we practice different multiplication and division strategies. This week we worked on skip counting, doubling and halving, and some “tricks” for questions involving numbers like 6 and 9.  The strategies are important to learn and practice but, once you have the hang of them, you can choose your favourite and use that strategy to help you solve problems all the time.  Standard 52-card deck - WikipediaWe continued to reinforce our multiplication skills with a few games on Thursday.  We completed our first round of our Multiplication War tournament.  Next week we’ll continue with round 2. We also played “Connect 4” using a deck of cards and a multiplication chart.

Matplotlib Bar Chart - Python TutorialOur Graph of the Week this week focused on Halloween.  We created pictographs and a bar graph to represent the data.  Then, in keeping with the Halloween theme, we worked on a coordinate graphing hidden picture activity. Halloween Math Coordinate Graphing Pictures - Plotting Ordered Pairs Activity It was quite challenging as it required plotting points and connecting the dots. Two of you were able to successfully complete the picture while the rest of you are still working on it.   Try to finish this at home this weekend or at least by Tuesday… Halloween day!  What was the hidden picture of?

Tuesday, next week, will be Halloween. It is a fun and exciting day. If you arePin on star party group going to dress up, make sure it is an appropriate costume for school. To celebrate we are going to spend the last hour of the day playing games together. Please feel free to bring in your favourite board game from home to share with your classmates. Also, you can bring yourself an extra afternoon snack for our game hour if you like.

Finally, Division 6 we wanted to say a HUGE thank you for your dedication and faithfulness in your role as Peer Mediators these past 6 weeks! Every one of you had a chance to do this job and you took your role very seriously.  We really appreciate your help out there at lunch with the primary students.  It’s time to hand over the job to the next class ( Division 1) and we’ll get another chance to do this job in June… to finish off the year.

Leaves are Falling, Autumn is Calling

fall-clipart-free-18-m-fall-leaves-fall-clip-art-autumn-clip-art-leaves-clip -art-clipart - Northeast Ohio ParentAnother short week has come and gone as we continue to watch as the season changes around us.  The leaves are falling and the beautiful fall colours right outside our window are keeping things bright and beautiful even though we have begun to see more rainy weather.  Cartoon weather illustration clipart - AutumnIn your planner this week, we reminded you to make sure you come to school prepared to play outside and recess and lunch. This is because it is very rare for it to be an inside day so you must have rainy weather attire so you do not have to spend the afternoons wet and soggy. It is really hard to learn when you are wet and cold, don’t you agree?Weather Clipart Happy Little Kids Autumn Activities Image - Etsy Canada Also, the weather changes from day to day here in Burnaby so it is important to take a few moments to watch the evening or morning news to plan your wardrobe for the school day ahead.

In Language Arts this week, we read a passage about video games. The focus of our reading this week was to identify both the main idea as well as the supporting details of the paragraph.  These concepts may seem straight forward but they are not. It takes time and practice to be able to read passages and pin point what are sentences are supporting the main idea and which are just fillers. Paragraphing. How to Compose an Effective ParagraphThere are six main types of supporting details: descriptions, vocabulary, proof, voices, explanation, and importance.  The main idea sentence is usually the subject of discussion and the topic sentence. Most of you were able to identify the main idea quite quickly while more of you found identifying the supporting details more challenging. We will continue to explore this idea and many more reading strategies in the months to come.

Way To Go Classic Round Sticker | Zazzle | Motivational sticker, Congrats, Word wall artCongratulations Division 6 on finishing your  “About Me” puzzle piece .  They are all up on our bulletin board and it’s a pretty interesting looking puzzle!  Now it’s time to prepare to share those with the class in your first ORAL PRESENTATION! Free Cliparts School Presentations, Download Free Cliparts School Presentations png images, Free ClipArts on Clipart Library A photo has been taken of your puzzle piece and is in TEAMS. Use that photo to prepare a short presentation about yourself and what you put on your puzzle piece.  Practice with your family as your audience and be ready to share sometime over the next two or three weeks. Last year’s Div.8 students will be the first ones to present and then everyone else will have their turn… random draws will determine who’s up… so… make sure when it’s your turn, you are ready!

We were busy in science this week as we finished our observations of our gummy worm experiments and have begun to write our conclusions. Science Party Frankenworms Gummy Experiment |… | PBS KIDS for ParentsWe discussed that a well written  conclusion of a science experiment must have : the answer to the question you were trying to answer, evidence for your findings with specific data/numbers, and reasoning which explains WHY things happened as they did.  Next week, we will take some more time in our pods to finish these up together. If that is not enough, we aA frog at the riverbank 525250 Vector Art at Vecteezylso had a visit from Naomi from Douglas College’s Institute of Urban Ecology to share her knowledge with us about amphibians living in our communities. More importantly, she had us think about the threats they face living in urban areas and what we can do to help keep them safe.

Off to Class: Incredible and Unusual Schools Around the World: Hughes, Susan: 9781926818863: Books - Amazon.caWe embarked on our study of unique schools around the world this week in Social Studies.  We started with an “anticipation guide” which included several statements about different schools.  In groups we discussed whether or not each statement was true or if we thought it was false.  We followed that up with 2 short videos that revealed the answers to our anticipation guide.  It was pretty surprising to find out which statements were true… in fact, we were pretty blown away to discover that ALL of the statements were indeed TRUE!! Which fact did you find most unbelievable?  We also read about a unique school right here in Canada.  Inaugural Green Apple Service Day encourages green schools - Construction CanadaThe David Suzuki Public school in Windsor Ontario is known for how eco-friendly it is and is the “greenest” school in the country!  Do you remember any of the unique features that this school has that makes it “green”?

In PE this week we began working on our volleyball skills. Grade 6’s are able to join the school’s volleyball team so we are excited to help you all gain some skills that will encourage you to join the team and have some fun playing this great sport!  This week we worked on “bumping”. Clip Art: Stick Guy Volleyball Pass Color I abcteach.comWe worked in pairs to get comfortable being in “ready” position and using the proper hand position to bump the ball to our partners.  It would be great to see some of you taking volleyballs outside at recess and lunch to practice some more, what do you think?

Free Bowling, Download Free Bowling png images, Free ClipArts on Clipart LibraryWhat do the terms “strike”, “spare”, “gutter”, and “bumper” have to do with? BOWLING!!   What a great time we had as a class at REV’s on Friday!  Although we were ready to not have bumpers on our lanes, a sudden switch resulted in almost all of us having bumpers! Bowling Clipart-bowling ball hitting pins on alley clipart That certainly helped our scores and it was so fun to see a bunch of STRIKES and SPARES in the mix as well!  Thank you to all the parent volunteers who walked with us to and from the bowling alley and for Mr. Peters for organizing this fun day for us!

Here is your blog response for this weekend about the unique schools we saw on the videos:

  1. The school I was most shocked by was the ______________ school because ________________________________.
  2. The school I was most interested to learn more about is the ____________ school because _____________________.
  3. If I could visit one of the schools I would choose the ___________ school because ______________________________.

Outstanding October

October Stock Illustrations – 507,717 October Stock ...It has been a short week but a busy one in Division 6. We have had a new addition to our class, Kendrick, welcome! Marquee Welcome PostcardsWe are now at 29 students making the room more lively and definitely energized.

We have been working on our Name story paragraphs.  Our first drafts needed some work so we discussed how to make our paragraphs more story-like and less like a list. What Your Name Stock Illustrations – 23 What Your Name Stock Illustrations, Vectors & Clipart - Dreamstime Some of you have already mastered the art of the paragraph using introductions to start, details in the middle, and a closing sentence at the end. Others of you are still practicing using all the parts. Either way, we have all completed two drafts and are ready to complete the finished product. With each revision, your paragraphs improved in style and polish. Editing is a crucial part of the writing process and is something we will focus on all year long. In addition to our name stories we began to create our Name Mandala’s which will be the art to accompany our stories.  mandala coloring pages blank coloring pages digital image 1We learned a little about where Mandalas come from and what they are meant to represent. The word “mandala” comes from Indian language and it means “circle” or “center”. The creation and coloring of a mandala can be calming and promote wellness.  Did you feel that way when we started? Do you think it will change as we keep moving forward with making them?

In Math, grade 5’s have moved on from their work on place value and are practicing their rounding/estimating skills. Round and Estimate - YouTubeThe past few weeks we have been working on different strategies to estimate like front-end, compatible numbers, compensation, clustering and even using a number line. We have begun to look at real life uses for estimation and applying estimating skills to real world problems.  Next up, we will be moving into operation practice. It is important at this grade level that students learn to become fluent with their multiplication facts up to 12.  Being able to recall the facts quickly and easily by memory Flashcards Cliparts - Multiplication Math Facts Clipart - Free Transparent PNG Clipart Images Downloadmakes division a snap and really helps make problem solving quicker and easier. If you have not already, you should be practicing your times tables and doing your very best to memorize them all. Our mad minute drills are coming soon, be ready!

Our Gummy Worm experiments are going great! This week you and your pod mates chose a liquid to place your worm in to find out how the liquid will affect the worm. After some research on both the worm’s ingredients and the liquid’s, your group was able to create a plan for your procedure and make observations over a few days.Scientific Method Clipart: Inquiry Based Science Graphics | TPT Next week, we are going to write up our conclusions and discuss if our hypothesis were correct or not. Another exciting science event next week will be our visit from a scientist from the Institute of Urban Ecology at Douglas college  for an in class workshop about Amazing Amphibians. This visit will be our introduction to our next unit of study which will be comparing humans, plants, and animals survival systems.

You have started the study of Education/schools around the world in Social Studies. You have been warming up your brains to the idea that schools can look very different from ours depending on where in the world it is located. School of Fear On that same theme, we are reading School of Fear by Gitty Daneshvari. The school is very different from our school because it is a summer school that is helping students to overcome their fears. The students we have been introduced to so far are Madeline who is afraid of bugs, Theo who is afraid of death, Garrison is afraid of large bodies of water, and Lulu is afraid of small spaces. Next week we should begin to find out what is different in this school from other more “regular” schools.

Friday was the Terry Fox Run. Did you bring a toonie for Terry? Do you know someone who is fighting cancer, has beat cancer, or has died from cancer? Cancer is something that has touched most families in some way and that is why it is so wonderful to get together as a school community to fundraise Terry Fox Run – Wilkinson Public Schoolfor Cancer research.  If we all do our part and honour our fellow Canadian’s legacy of hope we can continue to help doctors search for better treatment and maybe even a cure for this devastating disease. Thanks for you participation Division 6!

This is a long weekend and we hope you and your families will be spending time together and taking time to think about what you are thankful for. There Is Always Something To Be Thankful For Thanksgiving Text With Leaves Stock Illustration - Download Image Now We, your teachers, are thankful for all of our wonderful students this year. We have had so much fun getting to know you all so far this year and we are thankful we get to be part of your learning journey.

Tell us three things you are thankful for….

Have a wonderful long weekend,

Welcome to Division 6 students and parents.

Welcome Banner Stock Illustrations – 113,860 Welcome Banner ...A warm welcome to everyone. Thank you for visiting this blog. We hope that you will find this a helpful tool to connect parents with their children and what is happening for them at school. 133,700+ Blogging Illustrations, Royalty-Free Vector Graphics & Clip Art - iStock | Internet icon, Computer, Social mediaWe are so happy to have you here with us in Division 6 this year.  This blog will be a place to learn about the goings on in Division 6 on a weekly basis. We will be introducing this blog to all the parents at our Open House this Wednesday, September 27th. Back to School Open House PresentationAt the Open House, we will be going over our classroom routines and expectations as well as answering any burning questions parents might have about the upcoming year. If you are unable to attend the meeting, this blog will cover some of what will be shared there.

We are a grade 5/6 classroom and the only one in the school! We have a wonderful year ahead of us and we cannot wait to get started.  Mrs. Gil works Monday-Wednesday and Mrs. Davis is teaching Thursdays and Fridays.  We are partners and we are in constant contact with one another so the transitions between teachers is quite seamless. Interview with the world's best teacher… – CreativeSanWe have been teaching together for several years now and enjoy sharing the class and working together. We can best be reached by email. Please never hesitate to reach out to us with any questions or concerns. Some other teachers who will be working with your students this year are Ms. Wong for French twice a week and Mr. Chen for music once a week.

Our classroom has a lot of routines and expectations that really help it be a great place to grow and learn.  It is important that parents are aware of what is going on in class and we find that this blog is a great way to spark conversations at home as well as keeping parents “in the loop”. Another tool for communication that we should be receiving shortly in the classrooms is planners.Better Parent-Teacher Relationships - FastDirect Communications School Information System  Students are expected to fill in a planner daily and show their planner to someone at home. We try not to give out too much homework but sometimes, work comes home that needs to be finished and there is always the expectation of nightly reading. We realize that families are busy with extra curricular activities etc. so if ever something cannot be completed for whatever reason, please feel free to email us and we will happily allow for extra time. It is important that we get information from parents rather than the students because it demonstrates the students awareness of responsibility and lets us know that parents are aware of what is coming due.  Student Planner Cliparts png images | PNGWingNotices will also be found in the planner which are usually the parents’ responsibility to sign and return. Students are given time at the end of each day to fill out planners and complete classroom jobs so there should be a planner for parents to look at every day. Finally, planners will be a place students can write passwords and store their library cards.

As you may have heard already, there is a Mega Market in our class where students can purchase items and learn some real life money sense. T10 Classroom Routines and Procedures to Teach Right Away - Around the Kampfirehe students are able to earn Mega Bucks by participating and completing routine tasks.  Here are the most common ways:

  • home reading program
  • km club
  • weekly classroom jobs
  • weekly blog responses (ON TEAMS)

There will be many opportunities for students to volunteer and participate around the school this year and we hope everyone will try and help care for the community.

A Word About Participation - ART ED GURU

Students in grade 5 and 6 can be lunch monitors and peer mediators and we are proud to see how many students from Division 6 are already taking part.  Well done! During the year, there may be other ways to participate like joining teams, fundraising and donating.

Students have each been given two very important folders. One is for homework which is meant to travel to and from school daily. School | Pocket folder, Pocket folders, Education suppliesThe other is a “Working On” folder which students will keep in their desk to store any ongoing work until complete. Once complete, students will use binders to store completed work and they each will have a “living portfolio” on our bulletin board where we will be displaying work that we are proud of and want to share with each other. We also have shared school supplies for the students which frees up room in their desks and allows us to ensure all students have the tools they need to complete any task.  That being said, because the school supplies back-to-school-supplies-png-clip-art-black - Jarvis Traditional Elementarywill be staying in the classroom, we hope the students will have a set of supplies at home to use for any homework assignments that come home. Perhaps supplies left over from previous years? We have suggested to students that they make themselves a supply kit for homework and keep it close to where they like to do their homework.

We know this has been a lot of information but we also hope this is a helpful outline for some of the important routines and expectations of Division 6 for you. We look forward to the year ahead and let us make this our best year yet!
