Wow, what a busy and exciting week we’ve had! This week, we started our Fractions Unit! For some of you, fractions are brand new, and for others, it’s a bit of a review. Either way — we are all learning together! 🎉
In this unit, we will:
-
Understand what fractions are (like ½, ¼, ⅓).
-
Learn about equivalent fractions (did you know ½ is the same as 2/4?).
-
Compare and order fractions (Which is bigger: ⅓ or ¼?).
-
Use fractions in real-life problems, like measuring and sharing.
Our goals for this unit will be to learn about part-whole relationships, improper fractions and mixed numbers, and using fractions in number operations (like adding and subtracting fractions).
We also continued with our work around money! This week we visited 4 different activity stations: “Piggy Banking”, “Keeping it Simple”, “Making Change”, and ” What’s Another Way?”.
The skills we were practicing included recording and adding money amounts, representing money amounts using the least amount of bills/coins, calculating change, and showing 3 different ways to create the same amount of money. Not everyone completed each activity at each station and some of you chose to take it home to work on. Bring it back on Thursday because they will be need to be handed in completed by Friday.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, we continued reading our amazing novel “Out of My Mind” by Sharon Draper. Melody is now in Grade 5 and her school is trying something new — an inclusion model. This means that all students, no matter how they learn, are included in the same classrooms.

We’ve had great conversations about:
You all show such empathy and understanding, and I am so proud of you!
Speaking of being proud… all of you worked so hard to reach the goal to have all our African country paragraphs typed out, printed, and supported by images!! Whew! What a LOT of work you have already done. Each group is now on either planning the tri-fold board OR working on the actual presentation board.
That is great! There are lots of steps still to do before we are ready for our showcase, but we are certainly on track!! An email was sent to all families inviting you to “Save the Date”.
Our “Trip around the World” is happening on June 12th and families are invited to the tour from 2:30- 3:00 that afternoon. Mark your calendars! We’d love to see you!
As we begin to wrap up our Rocks and Minerals unit, we explored about how we can use Earth’s resources in a sustainable way. Sustainability means taking care of the Earth so that people, animals, and plants can live healthy lives now and in the future. It means using only what we need and making sure we don’t hurt nature. For example, if we cut down trees to make paper, we should also plant new trees. If we use water or electricity, we should try not to waste it.
Sustainability is about making smart choices that keep the environment clean and safe. When we take care of the planet, we help make sure it will still be a good place to live for our children and grandchildren.
To finish our unit, you’ll be working on a sustainability comic project and a Mini-Test to review what we have learned. We will have the test a little later in May because we think that working on the Comic project will help you remember all the cool things we’ve covered like:
On Wednesday, we had some fun in the computer lab, and we’ll do the same
next week! You will be using the lab to research for your projects, both your Sustainability Comic and your Career Project. In this project, you will choose a career that interests you and create a fun and informative brochure to teach others about it.
This term, we have been exploring your own skills, values, and interests—what you’re good at, what’s important to you, and what you enjoy doing. Now, we have asked you to pick a job that matches those things and research the
career to find out what the job is like, what tools or training are needed, and why it’s important. You’ll use this information to design a creative brochure that explains the career in an exciting way. You will share your brochure with the class so we can all learn about different jobs and start thinking about our futures! Remember, you’ll be making a brochure that tells people all about a cool job you’re interested in. Maybe you’ll be a vet, a pilot, a scientist, or a game designer!
We began our short unit on Body Changes and Health. We’re learning about how our bodies grow and change as we get older. It’s totally normal and part of
growing up! Some topics we’ll talk about are, healthy habits (like sleep, exercise, and eating well), changes during puberty (yes, that word!), taking care of our personal hygiene, and understanding our emotions and feelings. It is important to talk about this topic so that we can make informed healthy choices and show respect for ourselves and others. We’ll keep this unit fun, respectful, and open for questions.
We are proud of all the work you’re doing and the thoughtful way you treat each other. Keep being curious, kind, and courageous.
Our week ended with a somewhat wet, but very fun Jump Rope for Heart event! Everyone was enjoying the different opportunities to skip: long ropes, partner skipping, helicopter skipping, and even trying out some tricks.
Some of you are strong skippers and others are still learning, but the point was to get our hearts pumping, have some fun, and keep our bodies healthy and fit. Mission accomplished!
