The end is near, friends! We have made it to the last month and let the fun times roll! There is so much we are doing in class to finish everything before the school year comes to a close but there are also so many events happening this month as well. Never a dull moment here in Division 6!
We started the week off with our very last desk switch of the year! You are all sitting in the last spot you will sit in as a Division 6 student! Can you believe it?
Along with our desk switch, a new job has been added to our job board: Peer Mediation! We started the school year as Brentwood’s first peer mediator crew and now we’re ending the year in the same role. The only difference this time is that we get to choose if we want to take this on. Many of you have stepped up again and our primary students are well supervised over the lunch time break. Thanks Division 6!
We jumped right into our Media Projects which were started last week. In small groups and partnerships, you were asked to make a piece of media, in a
format of your choosing, that had both a “message” and a “purpose”. This project is meant to demonstrate to us that you have an understanding of WHY we want you to be media literate. Information and media literacy teaches you how to make informed judgments about information and media and how to use it.
Also, we want you all to become skillful creators and producers of information and media messages. We hope you had fun with this project!
In Math, the Grade 5’s are exploring angles and triangles. Over the last few weeks, we have been exploring how to name angles using the right angle (90 degrees) as a reference. We also expanded on this concept by putting the angles together to make triangles. 
We learned how to use their physical properties to identify and compare them all. There is a lot of vocabulary to know which is the most challenging part of this unit, wouldn’t you agree?
Our novel study continued this week and we have learned about “The Greatest Idea in the World” and “The Emergency Plan”. These kids sure are great friends of Ahmet, going to all this trouble to try and find his parents. 
We worked on some inferencing and predicting this week as well. We used our background knowledge of the book to make some mid-way predictions. We also looked back at our pre-reading predictions and see how they compared to what actually happened. Finally, we looked at how body language can give a lot of clues about how someone is feeling. Next week, the kids will be arriving at Buckingham Palace…… I wonder if they will meet the Queen?
Our poetry collection is on it’s editing and revising stage. With a partner, we are going over the draft selections that we want to publish from each set of poems. So far we have completed our Haiku, ABC, and Diamante poems. Our Cinquain, and Acrostics need to be edited by next Thursday. 
Friday was a super fun day! We had our first swimming session at Eileen Daily pool and did we ever have fun! It could not have been a better day for the walk there and back either! Thank you to Stanko’s mom for walking to and from the pool with us ! 
Three more sessions to go Division 6! Next session is on Wednesday, June 12th.
