Columbia Lily

Posted on May 26, 2020May 27, 2020

Good morning Division 7,

Hope you are all well 🙂 Nice to connect with some of you yesterday.

Two things to discuss:

  1. IXL
  2. Learning Opportunities

1. IXL

There are some of you who are working on IXL for math. Unfortunately, the free trial for schools ended yesterday. I have gotten in touch with the district to see if we can get a class membership. I am currently waiting on a response and will keep you posted when I hear back.

2. Learning Opportunities

To-do:
* : hand-in
(extension): optional

Priorities:
a.) Morning Journal*
b.) Literacy *
c.) Math

Extensions:
d.) Makers – habitat (optional)
e.) Genius Hour (optional)

Priorities

a.) Morning Journal *

Plant of the week: Columbia Lily

The Columbia Lily (sometimes known as Tiger Lily) is a native species to our region. They don’t like the shade very much so they often grow in pockets of the forest, meadow, or even roadside where there is sun exposure. Similar to the Trillium flower, the Columbia Lily seedling takes a long time be is able to grow flowers (several  years), so don’t pick them, either! Once they flower, the lilies blossom every year in early summer.

Some sources say that the indigenous people of the region used the bulb of the plant as a starchy component to meals.

I recently found this particular lily while I was taking a stroll at Lighthouse Park. There was a large variety of flowers there!

  • Morning Journal Question:
    • What do you notice about the Columbia Lily?
    • What do you think the function of each structure is?
    • Why do you think the shape is the way it is?
    • What questions do you have about the Columbia Lily?

b.) Literacy*

Please continue working on your “weird” animal research and villain character. Create a story once you finish your planning sheets.

Weird Animals Research Page

Villain Character Planning Sheet

optional: comic template sheet

Refer to Monday’s “Week 8” blog for more information.

c.) Math

Please continue your math program.
Khan Academy, IXL, worksheets, etc.

If you would like support/guidance on a math program, please contact me

Extensions (optional)

d.) Makers

Planning sheet: Habitats

While researching and exploring your “weird” animal, consider it’s habitat. Please recreate your animal’s habitat. This may be done on paper or in a real-life structure form.

Consider the 3 essential components of a habitat:

  1. Food
  2. Water
  3. Shelter

How does the animal’s habitat provide these 3 components? Please describe and represent this (either in a drawing or structure form). You may also display this on a PowerPoint (or any other way you wish to explore).

e.) Genius Hour (optional)

Continue your Genius Hour project. You may want to focus on your “weird animal” this week.  This is an ongoing project. If you have completed it or are just starting, here is the planning sheet to start a new inquiry: Genius Hour Planning Sheet

Follow these steps:
Brainstorm – what topics interest you? Write down topics that interest you (e.g. birds, palm trees, global warming, Jupiter, etc…). Select one to focus on this week.

Question – What deep questions do you wish to explore on your topic? (e.g. how do birds fly?)

Research – How are you going to find answers to your questions? With limited variety of resources, it will likely be online or an interview with an “expert” on the topic (perhaps family/friends).

Present – How are you going to share your knowledge? Please come up with a a way to briefly present your project. This may be through a speech, slideshow, poster, poem, comic, video, song, etc.

Share – Practice your presentation and share — either to me, family/friends, to the class during Sharing Circle.

Please follow the following planning sheet to guide you through your planning and  research.

See you at 11 am,

Ms. Daneshwand

I notice that the Columbia Lily is kinda upside down. I think the Columbia Lilys structure is surrounded with grass, moss and some roots in soil to grow. The bees can get the pollen more easily.

I noticed that the Columbia lily has lots of little speckles and it’s a really nice orange colour. (I skipped the second one cause I didn’t get it) I think it’s shaped that was because it’s kinda hidden in the bush but it’s sticking out a bit and it need to be a special shape for the rain to water it? My question about the Columbia lily is where do u find these flowers?

I noticed that the Columbia Lily has lots of brown spots on the petal. I also see that the shapes of the petal is curling upward. I think the reason why the Columbia Lily is upside down is because it grows better than growing upward. I wonder why the Columbia Lily has big brown seed hanging down in the middle. Thank you.

Why are the leaves have dots on it? I think the leaves curve up for bugs to live in it. It looks like it grows downwards because it is a heavy flower. It looks more like a vine. It’s a beautiful flower 🌹. I wonder if the flower is poisonous ☠️

I noticed the tiger lily has brown spots in the inside. I also noticed the flower is facing down. Maybe the flower is facing down because it is heavy. I also noticed that the flower is in a type of lion mane shape with the petals.

I think it looks old because it is hanging. It looks like a flower you cant have at home.

And maybe they have a ant on the flower. Maybe the flower is for the bees to make honey for us.

I think the shape is like that because it give the flower a chance to live a very long time.

I wonder if you can have the flower.
I wonder why it looks pretty.
