Apr 28th – 3rd Round of Activities (Band)
- Study and complete all assignments in SmartMusic.
- Study and practice every activity in Essential Elements from #107-118.

- Compose a short melody to represent the thoughts and feelings you have experienced during this period of isolation. Write about the experience of composing this melody and how it connects to your experiences. If possible notate your melody and submit a recording of you playing it.

Music Monday song – “Hymn To Freedom”
Many of you will remember singing the Oscar Peterson song “Hymn To Freedom” for Music Monday last year. The same song has been selected for Music Monday this year, which takes place on May 4th. Information on the event can be found at the link below.
Can you sing the song at home, and submit a recording of yourself singing? I’ve included a Youtube link at the bottom of this post for a choir singing the song (they sing it bilingually in French and English, but the English lyrics are subtitled all the way through if you want to sing along in English). I’ve also included a link for lyrics and a piano accompaniment track that you can use to practice singing solo and for your recording.

This Land is Your Land
I’m afraid the sound quality is not the best, but should be good enough for people to sing/play along…

7pm cheer
Every evening at 7 we cheer for the healthcare workers helping Covid-19 patients. In my neighbourhood many of us do it on our balconies using musical instruments that we have at home. Question: how many instruments can you see and hear in this video of us cheering yesterday?
Many people are encouraged to bang pots and pans together during the cheer, but instruments are great to use at this time as well. Do you have an instrument at home that you can sound during the cheer? Can you tell me about it, or send a video yourself of you playing your instrument during the cheer?

NEW ACTIVITIES POSTED FOR EACH GRADE LEVEL!
Under the page for your grade level you’ll see a page titled (Apr 14th – 2nd round of activities). On this page you’ll see 3 or 4 musical activities to choose from that can be done at home. Not all activities have to be done, but I expect each student to do at least one.
I welcome recordings or written accounts of work that students are doing at home, and hope to receive something from every student.
More activities will be posted in about two weeks time. If there is anything anybody would like to ask, confirm, or clarify please contact me at adrian.clift@burnabyschools.ca.

Apr 14th – 2nd round of activities (Band)
- Explore SmartMusic using the invitation that was sent by Mr. Clift. Submit to Mr. Clift a recording of yourself using SmartMusic to the best of your ability, or write about your experience as a first-time user of SmartMusic.
- Go outside, close your eyes, and listen. Think about what sounds you can hear. Then see if you can either recreate one of the sounds using your instrument, or make a short composition to make a representation of something that you heard (e.g. the life of a bird that you heard). Record and submit your composition.
- Take one of the exercises from Essential Elements that you know well. Transpose the song by starting on a different note and playing the melody using all the same note intervals as in the original exercise. Submit a recording of yourself playing your transposed version.
