Welcome Message

My name is Vivian Cheng, and this is my eighth year of teaching upper intermediate. Before coming to Chaffey-Burke, I had the joy of teaching at University Highlands and Montecito Elementary School, as well as working in the music industry as a piano teacher for over ten years.

I am a graduate of UBC with a major in English Literature and a minor in Sociology. At SFU, I obtained my Bachelor of Education through the Professional Development Program. I just finished my master’s degree in the Professional Master of Education program with a concentration on Educational Administration.

As an educator, I value fostering students’ life skills and social-emotional skills while encouraging their academic growth. I look forward to supporting your child in their learning journey!

Over the course of the school year, students will have the will have the opportunity to engage in a variety of inquiry based learning experiences. This emphasis on thinking skills will be present across the entire curriculum. Students will inquire into concepts such as responsibility, causation, reflection, and grade specific topics such as natural resources, simple machines, government, Canadian history, and the human body. Students will develop their communication skills and their social skills in community-building experiences and and will spend time working on reflective thinking to improve their learning in their Portfolios. In addition, we will also focus on our self-management skills such as organizing and using time wisely.

I will encourage students to record homework in their planners to increase responsibility, independence, and planning skills. I will check the planners on a regular basis. As part of daily homework responsibilities, students will be expected to read a variety of grade-appropriate literacy texts like novels and nonfiction texts. Homework may also include investigating personal inquiry questions, additional practice of basic skills, reviewing material in preparation for assessment, and finishing assignments that have not been completed in class.
