Back to school: Tips on how to be successful for math

  • Review your foundations! Practice your operations at home: adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. Challenge yourself to using 3 to 4 digit numbers in each operation.
  • Use flash cards to practice your multiplication and division facts. If you need a multiplication chart, click here!
  • Play online math games here! Don’t forget to monitor your screen time.
  • Ask Ms. Cheng for additional resources or extended homework

1. Concepts covered in Patterns and Algebra Unit so far:

– Increasing and decreasing patterns

– Identifying pattern rules (“Start at ___, ____ each time”)

– Describing and creating patterns

– Finding rules for T-Tables

-Creating T-Tables and solving patterns involving Time

-Using algebraic variables and solving simple algebraic equations

If you would like some extra practice, feel free to try this online workbook: Online workbook

Summative assessment: Students will be creating a poster, including the components of: an Art pattern design; creating and identifying pattern rules, making T-Table word problems, asking and answering word problems involving time, and algebraic equations. This will be completed Oct. 4-Oct. 15 during class time. On Oct. 15 at the end of the day, students completed a self-assessment, as well as got peer-assessment on a rubric regarding their understanding of patterns and algebra.

2. Concepts covered in Place Value Unit so far:

– place value to 1000

– show number concepts in expanded form and in written form

– estimation and rounding to millions
– regrouping with addition
– addition up to 4 digit numbers
– subtraction up to 4 digit numbers with regrouping

Summative assessment: Students will be creating their own estimation, addition, and subtraction word problems with regrouping. They will also be creating an answer key. This will be completed Nov. 15 during class time.

– Knowing when to multiply and divide
– Using DMSB to remember how to do long division

4. Concepts covered in Measurement Unit so far:

– Using non conventional units of measurement to find approximate measurements
– Converting between centimetres, and millimetres, and comparing units
– Assigning appropriante units of measurments
– Using addition to solve perimeter questions
