Mathematics
Teachers and Families: The following are five problems/tasks to choose from for this week.
Create a one metre measuring tool using string, paper or ribbon. Find five things in your home that are less than one metre long or tall and find five things that are more than one metre long or tall. Can you find something that is about one metre long or tall? How will you show your findings?
Choose something in your home. Estimate how tall, long, or wide it is. What could you use as a referent (your height, the length of your hand, something you know is one metre long etc) to compare it to help you estimate?
Choose five things at home to measure. What attributes could you measure – length, height, width, depth? Record your findings using pictures, numbers and words. Remember to include the “unit” you are measuring with. How long is two metres? How many centimetres are in two metres?
Find 3 things in your home that are about two metres wide. Record your findings using pictures, numbers and words. Remember to include the “unit” you are measuring with.
Numeracy Task: Create a visual that you could share with family, friends or the community about staying at least two metres apart from others when you leave your home. You could use paper and markers/crayons, loose parts or use technology. An example is provide below.
Literacy Activities
Pretend you are on a “reading vacation” at the beach. Set up a towel to lay on, put on a bathing suit, or other beach attire, grab some water, maybe a snack, and lay on the “beach” reading your book, magazine, anything you have in your home to read. Do you need your sunglasses?
Start a writing idea book. Write down interesting ideas, topics, objects that you might want to write about some day. Add words to describe each of your ideas.
Find or draw a picture. Without showing the picture to someone in your home, describe the picture. Use location language such as; (above, beside, under, right side, to the left of), shapes, colours, and/or how it makes you feel.
Create a commercial or advertisement to sell a product from a favourite story. For example: Pig’s brick house, a house made of gingerbread, a knight’s horse, Cinderella’s glass slipper. Include a picture and reasons why someone would want to buy it.
Write words containing the following letter blends; br, bl, cr, ch, gr, sw, tr, th. See if you can come up with some of your own letter blends.
Daily Physical Activity / Outdoor Learning
Use the following exercises and see how many times you can go through the numbers that are in your phone number. 0- 20 second plank hold, 1- 1 burpee, 2 – 2 star jumps, 3- 3 squats 4- 4 toe touches, 5- 5 sit ups, 6- 6 walking lunges 7- 7 seconds of running on the spot, 8- 8 big arm circles, 9- 9 jumping jacks.
Go outside for a walk. Can you see or hear any animals? Can you identify the animal? Where does it live? What does it need to survive? Can you see any adaptations that might help it survive in its habitat? How do you think humans are helping or harming this animal?
How do you feel today? Make a list of activities that make you feel good. Choose one of those activities (keeping social distancing in mind), do the activity. How do you feel now? What activity might you do next time?
Find the perimeter of an area of your home. It could be the living room, the backyard, a basement area or a hallway. Measure the perimeter using your outstretched arms or lunges. Track your measurements. Have a family member measure the same areas with their own arms or lunges. Discuss reasons why the results will be different from person to person.
