Happy First Day of October!

Today, we started off with our spelling test. Students had to write the definitions and spelling words that were given on Monday, September 14th. I will be posting their tests on Fresh Grade. If your child did not do well on the test, this is a sign that they need to study the words more carefully and regularly as they have a week and a half to study for the test.

Then, I taught a quick Math lesson again on the same topic of finding out the missing variable in an equation by doing the reverse operation to isolate the variable. Grade 4’s have page 24 #1, 2, 3, 6, &  7  and Grade 5’s have  page 22 #1-7 and if they didn’t finish it, is it homework due tomorrow.

After snack and DPA, we listened to a French numbers song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhj9SqrIZqI

It’s definitely stuck in my head now 🙂 We focused on the numbers from 1-10 and students wrote these down. Then, I gave the students a colour by number where they had to identify the French colour and number in order to create the mystery picture: a Starry Night painting.

I also assigned Social Studies projects for the Grade 4’s and 5’s. The Grade 4’s will be making a shoebox diorama with 5 artifacts in it that represent that province/territory and will be writing a report after researching specific categories and facts about that place. The Grade 5’s are creating an immigration suitcase in a shoebox and handwritten letters. They will pretend they are an immigrant who is moving to Canada in a certain year/time period and create artifacts that represent why they are leaving their country to come to Canada and what they hope for in their life in Canada. They will also write letters from a first person perspective to detail their challenges, which will be prompted by their research. It will be so much fun 🙂

After lunch, students worked on their autobiography &  timeline which is due along with their presentation on Monday. At the very end of the day, we went to the library and students borrowed two books to take home.

Also, I will not be doing a newsletter this year, but instead posting learning topics on the blog.

Our Main Learning Topics for October:

Literacy: Reading Responses & Finishing our Autobiographies & Grammar in Writing

Social Studies: Continued Provinces & Territories for Grade 4 and Immigration for Grade 5

Math: Place Value & Whole Numbers

Art: Vincent Van Gogh Artwork & Pop Art

Sincerely,

Ms. Wilks
