The students in Division 6 have really enjoyed learning about Story Workshop with Ms. Carson in the Library. It is a creative, hands-on way to learn about storytelling.

Today we completed our Bartering Activity with Division 5 (“a new group of people”) to gain an understanding of how the Explorers and Indigenous Groups around the world may have felt on their first encounters.
We wanted the students to focus on these questions during the experience: How did you communicate with someone when you don’t speak the same language? Which strategies did you use to complete your trades? What gestures were useful? Why was it important to be respectful during these interactions?
All of the students respected our no talking rule and found ways to communicate with the ‘new group’ of people.

We are so happy that our Instructional Writing Pamphlets have been getting quite a bit of attention in the hallway! We have seen many staff and fellow students stopping by for a read. Our decision to use the laptops to publish them has really made them eye-catching and authentic-looking.

We welcomed the Lunar New Year in our classroom with this beautiful dragon and lantern bulletin board. Our lanterns fit in nicely with our Art unit on Texture, as we filled each segment with detailed patterns and symbols.

Hello families! What a wonderful first week back to school! We enjoyed seeing everyone so much and hearing all about their winter break adventures. We decided to set some goals and think about what we wanted to work on in 2022. Our ‘toast-shaped’ paragraphs were used to create this beautiful bulletin board inside our classroom.

During the past month, we learned about sentence structure and proper punctuation in Writing. We read the book, Punctuation Takes a Vacation by Robin Pulver, to remind us of the important work these symbols do to make our Writing clear. We wrote these playful postcards to the different forms of punctation to convince them to return to the classroom as soon as possible!

Today we were fortunate enough to join an author sharing session via Zoom with David Alexander Robertson of the Cree Nation. He has published over 25 books across a variety of genres and is also known for his public speaking.
Ask your child to share what they remember about the story and/or any personal connections that David included about his own dad. Also, ask your child if they have any personal connections with the story that was read.

In Physical and Health Education, we have been exploring the concept of and strategies to help self-regulate our behaviour at school and elsewhere. Some useful terminology that helps children grasp this concept is naming behaviour as expected and / or unexpected. We are sharing this lesson and a few work samples with you as we think it might be useful terminology to carry on at home.
