“Mandalas About Me”

The next step in our exploration of Mandala artwork, was to create personal Mandalas.  We call them, “Mandalas About Me”.  Each student translates their passions, strengths, and / or personal characteristics into symbols.  The symbols are repeated in concentric circles to create these stunning art pieces.  We hung them around the perimeter of our classroom so that we are reminded of all the unique individuals that make up Division 6.  It is also another natural way to reflect on the Core Competencies as we focus on “building from our strengths”.

Nature-Inspired Mandalas

We enjoyed using natural materials to create these beautiful mandalas.  The items were all found on the ground (i.e., no picking or harvesting from living plants allowed) and then transformed into these temporary art pieces.  The photos were taken to capture our creativity before returning the materials to nature.

Welcome to Division 6!

September has been a busy month in the classroom, with the students learning about their new classmates and teachers.  We like to begin the year by focusing on creating a positive classroom climate.  This Rights and Responsibilities lesson and discussion is just one of the activities that is part of that process.

Bubble Bubble By Mercer Mayer

It was so much fun to explore our Wonder Question: If you make a star, square, or oval shaped wand, what shape will the bubble be?  We were able to make our own wands and bubble solution to try and figure out the answer.

Stream of Dreams

Division 5 really enjoyed learning about all of the ways we can protect our oceans, waterways, and wildlife during our “Stream of Dreams” Zoom workshop.  We hope some of those helpful tips and facts were shared at home!  Our beautiful fish will be displayed on the fences around our school to remind us of that learning.

Coding with Micro:bits

We are so thankful to have Ms. Coutts (District Technology Team) joining us virtually to guide us through this coding unit!  Today, we were making digital animations with simple messages and images.  We look forward to seeing her again next week for another session.

The Amazing Cedar Tree!

On Friday we continued our artist study of famed British Columbia artist, Emily Carr.  We were inspired by her masterpieces to create our own.  We were experimenting with pencil shading and some pastel work.  Here is a small sample of some of our creations.

Our home and land

During our Library and Social Studies time, we have been exploring our connections to the land and the plants and animals that surround us.  We have spent time exploring the local cedar trees in our neighbourhood and doing some writing activities outside.  In class, we have been learning about the natural qualities of cedar and how it was and continues to be used by our local First Nations People.
