This Week and Upcoming Dates

Good morning families,

Just a couple reminders about some upcoming events this week and the rest of September. Ms. Raj has begun her practicum today and she will be with us until December 4th.

Tuesday September 23rd- Pizza Birthday

We have a birthday in Division 11! Johannes’ family would like to celebrate with a Pizza Party. I recommend still packing a snack and lunch on this day and the class will enjoy a special treat. We are very excited to celebrate!

Thank you to families who have been checking in with me for birthdays. We currently have 21 students. I will be sending home a class list with names for families sometime this week.

Division 11 Class Charter

Attached is our Class Charter that we created as a class after many discussions on what we want our classroom to look, sound and feel like. This is something we will refer to as we create our classroom community.

Orange Shirt Day and National Day for Truth and Reconciliation:

A reminder that Monday is Orange Shirt Day. We will begin our age appropriate discussions during Social Studies and will continue our learning throughout this school year. As we have Tuesday off Library will be cancelled. Feel free to bring your books on Monday or Thursday next week for open book exchange at 1pm after planners.

Planners:

Thank you for supporting your child in bringing their planner to school each day. It is a safe spot for notices and a great tool to enhance organization, planning and communication. Each week take a look in the planner for your child’s words of the week. They will be posted on the right hand side beside Saturday and Sunday.

As everyone is at different levels in the class in regards to literacy skills, here are some ways you can work on the 5 words each week:

  • sight word recognition
  • spelling
  • writing the words into sentences
  • create a story using all 5 words orally or in written form

At the end of each week I would like to start doing a mini white board spelling task to go over these words.

Library:

Division 11’s Library will be on Tuesdays with our Librarian Ms. Ho. Each week I encourage students in my class to take 2 books that are just right for them and 1 book that a family member can read. A total of 3 books can be taken out of the Library under one account. Below are the images I use to help support students decide what books are right for them and their development.

Outdoor Classroom:

Division 11 will be exploring and making connections to our curriculum outside. Every Thursday please ensure your child is prepared to go outdoors rain or shine. When it begins to rain I recommend rain gear such as boots, waterproof pants, water proof jacket and extra socks!

Inside Shoes:

As the weather is starting to change each student in Division 11 will need indoor shoes. It is not only a way to keep our feet dry after going outside but it also keeps our classroom, hallways, Music room, Library, gym and carpet clean to sit on throughout the day. Let’s all work together to keep our classroom and community clean.

Welcome to the Blog!

Good morning families and welcome to our class blog!

I am so excited to have your children in my class. The next couple weeks is all about getting to know each other, forming routines and creating a kind, safe and caring classroom environment to foster growth and independence.

I will be using this blog to communicate upcoming dates, important school new and different things that will be occurring within our classroom. Things always pop up throughout the school year and using the blog goes straight to your email. It also gives families who are learning English alongside their child a more accessible way to translate information into their home language.

I am looking forward to meeting and getting to know you, your child and your family during our Parents as Partners conversations in Early October.

If you would like another parent or family member added to the blog please send me an email. I added all primary accounts listed on the MyEd system.

Welcome Letter:

Thank you to families who already went through the letter sent home on Monday. It has important information for the start of our school year. Please send extra clothing and indoor shoes as soon as you can to help your child get into the routine of swapping shoes before the season of fall and the wet weather that often follows. I recommend labeling all clothing as many students have similar clothing and are similar sizes.

Planners:

Thank you for supporting your child in bringing their planner to school each day. It is a safe spot for notices and a great tool to enhance organization, planning and communication. Please take a look at the planner each evening. Each week take a look in the planner for your child’s words of the week (starting next week). Grade 1 and 2 will have 5 different words to practice each week. These 5 words will help support your child with sight word recognition and spelling.

Literless Lunches:

Thank you for your help and support as we become a more sustainable school by taking all our garbage from home back home. I loved seeing all the new reusable lunch containers and bags provided in lunch kits to take home at the end of each day. It is a transition and when we work together we can make great change happen.

Student Teacher:

Please give a warm welcome to my Student Teacher from Simon Fraser University, Ms. Raj! She will be with us in Division 11 from September 22nd until the first week of December. Ms. Raj is currently an Educational Assistant in our school district and is working her way to becoming a certified teacher. Last school year during Term 2 Ms. Raj completed her first practicum under my supervision, mentorship and guidance and I am so excited she is back at Suncrest to complete her second practicum. She will be here this week shadowing myself and getting to know the students in Division 11.

Scholastics:

Our class Scholastic code is RC130056. If you are interested in purchasing books for your library at home to promote literacy and reading each day I highly recommend scholastic as they have many books at the Grade 1/ 2 reading level, have many options for fiction and non-fiction and have a current selection of books. Grade 1 and 2 are great foundational years to promote early literacy skills and I am so excited to be on your child’s journey. Our first Scholastic orders will be due on Friday October 10th.

September Calendar:

Below is our monthly calendar. It will also be posted in the classroom window. To continue being sustainable and saving paper (a Suncrest wide school goal this year) please download or take a photo of the calendar in our window as I will not be printing out copies for everyone.
