Term 2 Learning Goals

Scope and sequence of the following learning goals may change to meet the students’ learning needs.

Math

Big Ideas:

Decimals, fractions, and percents are used to represent and describe parts of whole numbers.

The constant ratio between the circumference and diameter of circles can be used to describe, measure, and compare spatial relationships.

Properties of objects and shapes can be described, measured, and compared using volume, area, angles, and circles.

Patterns and Algebraic Thinking:

-increasing and decreasing patterns using expressions, tables, and graphs

-one-step and 2-step equations for all operations

-discrete linear relations using expressions, tables, and graphs

 

Fractions, Percents, and Ratios:

-relationships between decimals, fractions, ratios, and percents

-improper fractions and mixed numbers

-conversion, equivalency, and terminating versus repeating decimals

-financial literacy (calculating percentage, sales tax, tips, discounts)

 

Geometry: Shapes and Angles:

-classification and sorting of triangles

-angle measurement and classification

-circumference and area of circles

-constructing circles given radius, diameter, area, and circumference

Language Arts

Big Ideas:

Exploring and sharing multiple perspectives extends our thinking.

Questioning what we hear, read, and view contributes to our ability to be educated and engaged citizens.

Comprehend and Connect:

-fiction reading including different genres of text through short stories, prose, and poetry

-non-fiction reading including current events and reading connected to Science and Social Studies

-Book Club: Racism and Equality

 

Create and Communicate

-exchange ideas and viewpoints to build shared understanding and extend thinking

-use writing and design processes to plan, develop, and create engaging and meaningful literary and informational texts for a variety of purposes and audiences

-use an increasing repertoire of conventions of Canadian spelling, grammar, and punctuation

Science

Big Ideas:

Elements consist of one type of atom, and compounds consist of atoms of different elements chemically combined.

Everyday materials are often mixtures.

Chemistry:

Atoms, Elements, and the Periodic Table

Social Studies

Big Ideas:

Systems of government vary in their respect for human rights and freedoms.

Increasingly complex societies required new systems of laws and government.

Global Inequalities:

-different systems of government

-global poverty and inequality issues, including class structure and gender

-international cooperation and responses to global issues

-ask questions, corroborate inferences, and draw conclusions about the content and origins of a variety of sources

-differentiate between short- and long-term causes and intended and unintended consequences of events, decisions, or developments

Art

Big Ideas:

Experiencing art challenges our point of view and expands our understanding of others.

Drama, dance, music, and visual arts are each unique languages for creating and communicating.

Physical and Health Education

Big Ideas:

Daily participation of different types of physical activity influences our physical literacy and personal health and fitness goals.

Healthy choices influence our physical, emotional, and mental well-being.

Physical Education:

Health Education:

-signs and symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression

-consequences of bullying, stereotyping, and discrimination

-describe and assess strategies for promoting mental well-being for self and others

Career Education

Practicing respectful, ethical, and inclusive behaviour prepares us for the expectations of the workforce.
