Term 1 Learning Goals

Scope and sequence of the following learning goals may change to meet the students’ learning needs.

Big Ideas:

Computational fluency and flexibility with numbers extend to operations with whole numbers and decimals.

Mixed numbers and decimal numbers represent quantities that can be decomposed into parts and wholes.

Place Value:

-place value from thousandths to billions

-comparing, ordering, and estimating numbers from thousandths to billions

-representing numbers in standard form, word form, and expanded form

-introduction to integers

 

Operations:

-operations with whole numbers

-multiplication and division facts to 100 (computational fluency)

-order of operations with whole numbers

-greatest common factor and least common multiple

-operations with decimals

-operations with integers

 

Fractions, Percents, and Ratios:

-relationships between decimals, fractions, ratios, and percents

-improper fractions and mixed numbers

-conversion, equivalency, and terminating versus repeating decimals

-financial literacy (calculating percentage, sales tax, tips, discounts)

Language Arts

Big Ideas:

Exploring stories and other texts helps us understand ourselves and make connections to others and to the world.

Language and text can be a source of creativity and joy.

Comprehend and Connect:

-recognize and appreciate how different features, forms, and genres of texts reflect different purposes, audiences, and messages

-forms, functions, and genres of text

-recognize and identify the role of personal, social, and cultural contexts, values, and perspectives in texts

-construct meaningful personal connections between self, text, and world

-reading strategies

 

Create and Communicate

-exchange ideas and viewpoints to build shared understanding and extend thinking

-use writing and design processes to plan, develop, and create engaging and meaningful literary and informational texts for a variety of purposes and audiences

-use an increasing repertoire of conventions of Canadian spelling, grammar, and punctuation

Science

Big Ideas:

The solar system is part of the Milky Way, which is one of billions of galaxies.

The Solar System

-the overall scale, structure, and age of the universe

-the position, motion, and components of our solar system in our galaxy

-planets, moons, asteroids, meteors, comets, etc.

-First People’s perspectives regarding aurora borealis and other celestial phenomena

-contributions of Canadians to exploration technologies

-solar energy

-demonstrate a sustained curiosity about a scientific topic or problem

-use equipment and materials safely, identifying potential risks

-identify First Peoples perspectives and knowledge as sources of information

Social Studies

Big Ideas:

Economic specialization and trade networks can lead to conflict and cooperation between societies.

Early Societies: Rise, Fall, Innovations and Interactions

-origins, core beliefs, narratives, practices, and influences of religions, including at least one Indigenous to the Americas

-social, political, legal, governmental, and economic systems and structures, including at least one Indigenous to the Americas

-features and characteristics of civilization, and factors that led to the rise and fall

-use Social Studies inquiry process and skills to: ask questions, gather, interpret, and analyze ideas, and communicate findings and decisions

-access the significance of people, places, events, or developments at particular times and places

Art

Big Ideas:

Through art making, one’s sense of identity and community continually changes.

Drama, dance, music, and visual arts are each unique languages for creating and communicating.

Projects:

-art to explore self-identity

-explore relationships between identity, place, culture, society, and belonging through the arts

-reflect on works of art and creative processes to understand artists’ intentions

-describe, interpret, and respond to works of art

Physical and Health Education

Big Ideas:

Healthy choices influence our physical, emotional, and mental well-being.

Physical literacy and fitness contribute to our success in and enjoyment of physical activity.

Physical Education:

-volleyball skills

-various team / partner games and activities

-cooperative and competitive games

-develop and demonstrate safety, fair play, and leadership in physical activities

 

Health Education:

-basic principals for responding to emergencies

-strategies to protect themselves and others from potential abuse, exploitation, and harm in a variety of settings

Career Education

Big Ideas:

Leadership represents good planning, goal-setting, and collaboration.

Save environments depend on everyone following the rules.
