Term 3 Learning Goals

Scope and sequence of the following learning goals may change to meet the students’ learning needs.

Math

Big Ideas:

Grade 3: Fractions are a type of number that can represent quantities.

Development of computational fluency in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole number requires flexible decomposing and composing.

Grade 4: Fractions and decimals are types of numbers that represent quantities.

Development of computational fluency and multiplicative thinking requires analysis of patterns and relations in multiplication and division.

Financial Literacy:

-earning, spending, saving, and giving

-making simple financial decisions

-applying strategies to calculate totals and make change

-fluency with coins and bills to 100 dollars

 

Fractions:

-fractions represent part of a region, set, or linear model

-fractions parts are equal shares of portions of a whole or unit (equal partitioning)

-concrete, pictorial, and numerical representations

-comparing and ordering fractions with like denominators (grade 4)

 

Decimals (Grade 4):

-relating fractions to decimals

-decimals to tenths and hundredths

-addition and subtraction of decimals to hundredths

 

Time:

-digital and analog clocks

-concept of a.m. and p.m.

-telling time

 

Multiplication and Division of Larger Numbers (Grade 4):

-multiplication and division of 2- or 3-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers

Language Arts

Big Ideas:

Language and text can be a source of creativity and joy.

Exploring stories and texts helps us understand ourselves and make connections to others and to the world.

Comprehend and Connect:

-Local First Peoples’ oral stories

-non-fiction reading strategies connected to Social Studies, Science, and Health Education topics

-fiction reading strategies

Create and Communicate

-5-sentence paragraph

-transition words for paragraphing

-revising and self-editing skills

Science

Big Ideas:

Grade 4: The motions of the Earth and the moon cause observable patterns that affect living and non-living things.

The Sun, Moon, and Earth:

-the effects of the relative positions of the Sun, moon, and Earth including local First People’s perspectives on the phases of the moon and tides, solar and lunar eclipses

-local changes caused by Earth’s axis, rotation, and orbit (day and night, annual seasons)

Social Studies

Big Ideas:

Indigenous knowledge is passed down through oral history, traditions, and collective memory.

Interactions between First People and Europeans lead to conflict and cooperation, which continues to shape Canada’s identity today.

Local Indigenous People

-cultural characteristics and ways of life of local First Peoples

-interconnections of culture and technological innovations of local Indigenous peoples

-governance and social organization in local Indigenous societies

-oral history, traditional stories, and artefacts as evidence as evidence about past First Peoples cultures

Art

Big Ideas:

Creative experiences involve an interplay between exploration, inquiry, and purposeful choice.

Art:

Drama:

-Reader’s Theatre plays

Physical and Health Education

Big Ideas:

Daily participation in physical activity at moderate to vigorous intensity levels benefits all aspects of our well-being.

Our physical, emotional and mental health are connected.

Physical Education:

-relay skills

-assorted team and group games

-cooperative and competitive games

 

Health Education:

-strategies for accessing health information

-effects of different substances, and strategies for preventing harm

Career Education

Big Ideas:

Grade 3: Effective collaboration relies on clear, respectful communication.

Grade 4: Leadership requires listening to and respecting the ideas of others.

Teamwork and Leadership:

-work respectfully and constructively with others to achieve common goals

-use innovative thinking when solving problems

-problem-solving and decision-making strategies

Applied Design, Skills and Technology
