Term 1 Learning Goals

Scope and sequence of the following learning goals may change
to meet the students’ learning needs.

Math |
Big Ideas: Regular Increases and decreases in patterns can be identified and used to make generalizations. Development of computational fluency in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers requires flexible decomposing and composing. |
Number Concepts: -place value of 1’s, 10’s, 100’s (and 1000’s grade 4) -representing numbers numerically, in expanded form, concretely and pictorially -comparing and ordering numbers -skip counting forward and backward from any starting point
Patterns: -increasing and decreasing patterns -pattern rules using words and numbers -representing patterns using tables and charts (grade 4)
Addition and Subtraction: -addition and subtraction facts to 20 -addition and subtraction to 1000 (grade 3) / 10 000 (grade 4) -estimating sums and differences -using addition and subtraction in real-life contexts
Financial Literacy: -making simple financial decisions involving earning, spending, saving, and giving -applying strategies to calculate totals and make change |

Language Arts |
Big Ideas: Stories and other texts help us learn about ourselves, our families, and our communities. Exploring stories and texts helps us understand ourselves and make connections to other and to the world. |
Comprehend and Connect: -fiction reading and listening strategies: connecting, predicting, and summarizing to deepen understanding -non-fiction reading and listening strategies: vocabulary building, using contexts clues, and non-fiction text features to deepen understanding
Create and Communicate -personal response writing and communicating -writing: parts of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives), simple sentences, capitals and end punctuation, proof-reading -oral language: taking turns as speaker and listener to share thoughts, opinions, and ideas |

Science |
Big Ideas: Living things are diverse, can be grouped, and interact in their ecosystems. Living things sense and respond to their environment. |
The Salish Sea and BC’s Rainforest -biodiversity in the local environment -the knowledge of local First Peoples of the ecosystem -energy is needed for life (producers, consumers, decomposers) -energy pyramids -food chains and food webs -demonstrate curiosity about the natural world -make observations about living and non-living things |
