Counting Collections

Division 7 students have enjoyed taking part in our Counting Collection activities. The children have enjoyed applying their mathematical thinking to count different materials and objects. This hands-on experience has been a great introduction to our Multiplication Unit.

What are some concepts we practice during counting collection time?

  • one-to-one correspondence
  • cardinality – knowing the last number stated when counting represents the total
  • stable order
  • subitizing
  • estimating
  • place value (e.g., teens as ten and some more, 2-digit numbers as groups of tens and ones, etc.)
  • connecting a count to a numeral
  • skip counting
  • multiplicative thinking (e.g., I have five groups of seven and three more)
  • division (and how this is related to multiplication)
  • flexible counting strategies
  • factors and multiples – which can lead to discussions about prime and composite numbers

Estimation + Counting Strategies:

We started off by estimating how many items were in each bag. We then had to figure out different strategies to find the answer. We counted by 1`s, 2`s , 3`s, 5`s and 10`s

Introduction to equal groups in multiplication:

Students used their counting collections to make equal groups. We discussed the link between multiplcation and counting strategies.
