Boost Your Power Smarts Challenge – Week 3: Tue, Oct. 15, 2019

Hello Division 3,

We are headed into Week 3 of the Boost Your Power Smarts Challenge.  This week we learned about different modes (types) of transportation that was used throughout history.  We discussed how some forms of transportation are more environmentally friendly than others based on whether it uses renewable energy vs. non-renewable energy to power them.

Here is the Travelling Through Time Slide Show that we covered in class.

Please review for next Tuesday:
(1) the different modes of transportation throughout history
(2) the fun facts for each mode of transportation
(3) the 5 facts about electric vehicles

Last class, we did not get a chance to discuss what factors (reasons) make a city livable vs. difficult to live in because our science time was cut short due to the field trip.  In addition to reviewing the above topics, your job this weekend is to do some research or have a discussion with your family members on what are some things that make a city comfortable to live in versus one that is not.  Come to class this Tuesday with ideas to discuss.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving long weekend!

Ms. Liu

Boost Your Power Smarts Challenge – Week 2: Tue, Oct. 8, 2019

Hello Division 3,

I want to give the class a big applause once again for working so well together and doing such an amazing job on the Week 1 Science of Energy Challenge!  The Buckingham Palace Bears are currently leading the scoreboard.  Keep up the good work!

Please prepare for Week 2’s challenge on Tue, Oct. 8th by reviewing the content we learned in class.  Here is the Electricity Around the World Slide Show

Topics you should study include:
(1) types of renewable resources (solar, wind, hydro, geo-exchange) and their fun facts
(2) types of non-renewable resources/fossil fuels (oil, coal, natural gas) and their fun facts
(3) negative impacts of non-renewable resources
(4) 74% of the world’s electricity is currently created with non-renewable resources / which one is used the most
(5) 67% of Canada’s electricity is currently created with renewable resources / which one is used the most
(6) 90% of B.C.’s electricity is made from hydroelectric dams

Here is the link to the video about how geo-exchange energy works for a nice recap.

Have fun reviewing and have a good weekend!

Ms. Liu

Boost Your Power Smarts Challenge – Week 1: Tue, Oct. 1, 2019

Hello Division 3,

As you all know, we will be competing in BC Hydro’s Boost Your Power Smarts Week 1 Challenge Quiz this Tuesday.  Here is the Science of Energy Slide Show that we covered in class last week.  This should be especially helpful for our Grade 6s who were away at camp.  The links to the 2 videos that we watched in class are in the slide.

Have fun studying about:
(1) potential energy vs. kinetic energy
(2) the other main types of energy that exist
(3) how electricity is made in BC
(4) what type of light bulbs are most energy efficient
(5) how to measure electricity we use in our homes
(6) how to calculate the cost of electricity used

Come to class prepared and ready to use your knowledge.  See you on Tuesday 🙂
