Many things were new that came to me when I (and the class) read about the festival, Day of the dead and dewali. Day of the dead is celebrated in mexico and some parts of central america. It is a celebration that recognises the dead (family members and others) They bring bread, candles and set up altars to remember their family. Store owners sell special designed candy, art, etc during “DOTD”. People paint masks of skeletons on their faces to represent their deceased family members.

Some Interesting Facts about the Day of the Dead

1.It isn’t simply Mexico’s version of Halloween: Even though they are both commemorated on the same day, the Day of the Dead actually has very little to do with Halloween. In fact, it was originally a summertime event. However, after the Spanish colonized Mexico, its observance was moved to October 31 to associate it with the Catholic commemoration of All Hallows’ Eve.

2.It’s actually three days: Celebrations for the Day of the Dead begin on October 31. The following day is known as Dia de los Inocentes, during which the lives of deceased children are celebrated. Finally, November 2 is All Souls Day, when adults who have passed on are remembered.

3.The dead are in attendance: Early Mexicans beliefs were that the dead can travel back and forth between worlds. Thus, participants believe that their dead relatives are actually present during the festivities.
Day of the dead in México

4.Every commemorative alter is unique (and the same): While alters are made by participants to highlight the unique personalities of their deceased family and friends, each must also include the four elements of nature: wind, water, fire and earth.

5.The unofficial mascot was once a political symbol: You’ll see many depictions of a skeleton dressed in high class clothing during the Day of the Dead. This is la Calavera Catrina, and she originally was used as a symbol of class warfare during the Mexican Revolution.

6.The party is literally in the graveyard: Families will decorate the graves and tombs of their loved ones, and then hold celebrations including food and music right in front of them.

7.The skulls mean more than just death: Skulls feature prominently in Day of the Dead celebrations, even down to making little sugar skulls to place on alters. In pre-Hispanic times, the indigenous Mexican population viewed the skull as both a symbol of death and re-birth.

8.It’s celebrated in Spain, too: While Spanish culture has heavily influenced Mexico, it has also adopted several Mexican traditions, one of which is the Day of the Dead.

9.It’s meant to be both happy and sad: Humor plays a huge role in the Day of the Dead, as participants believe their deceased loved ones are laughing at their jokes along with them. At the same time, the celebration is also meant to prompt somber reflection of the lives of those who’ve passed on.

The families put different types of items that resemble their culture. First of all there is a beautiful yellow flower called marigold. The dead’s families put this flower on their , ofrenda(which i’m going to explain later) to act as an offering to the dead and to beautify decorate it. The Day Of The Dead also known as Dia de Los Muertos is celebrated in Mexico and all over Latin America. It celebrates the dead and it is believed that the dead can return to the world and visit their family and loved ones, here are some facts you might not know about it:

    1. Although it is called the Day Of The Dead it is actually celebrated over 3 days, on October 31, children will often dress up in costume and collect candy, although this is a relatively recent addition to the celebrations, November 1, known as All Saints Day in many countries, is celebrated as Dio de Los Inocentes or Dio de Los Angelitos, which honors recently departed children. November 2, All Souls Day, is reserved for the souls of adults who have passed during the year.

    2. Mexican cempasuchit (marigold) is the traditional flower used to honour the dead. It is yellow like the sun and represents life and hope. They are used on altars and at graveyards.

    3. Día de Los Muertos originated in ancient Mesoamerica (Mexico and northern Central America) where indigenous groups, including Aztec, Maya and Toltec, had specific times when they commemorated their loved ones who had passed away. Certain months were dedicated to remembering the departed, based on whether the deceased was an adult or a child.

    4. While alters are made by participants to highlight the unique personalities of their deceased family and friends, each must also include the four elements of nature: wind, water, fire and earth.

    5. You’ll see many depictions of a skeleton dressed in high-class clothing during the Day of the Dead. This is la Calavera Catrina, and she originally was used as a symbol of class warfare during the Mexican Revolution.

    6. Depictions of the Xoloitzcuintli (or the Mexican hairless dog) are often featured in Day of the Dead decorations as these animals will lead the dead back to heaven after the party is over.

    7. The Day of the Dead is Mexico’s biggest religious holiday, with big public events like parades and gatherings at cemeteries (complete with mariachi bands) as well as more intimate celebrations that take place inside individual homes. Because of that, it can get expensive. Some families in rural parts of Mexico spend as much as two months’ income on lavish decorations and food specific to the holiday

    8. One of the main functions of the Day of the Dead is the cleaning of the graves. This is done both as part of the ritual to prepare for the very important visitors that will be coming (i.e. the spirits of the dead) as well as for pragmatic reasons — unlike in the United States, in Mexico, the majority of cemeteries are not privately owned and therefore have to be maintained by members of the community.

9.Cempazuchitl, the official flowers of the Day of the Dead, are used in massive quantities to decorate the graves and altars — a practice that has its roots in pre-Columbian traditions. These flowers (nicknamed el flor del muerto – “the flower of the dead”), sometimes said to represent the sun and rebirth, are also believed to help guide the spirits back home. In English, they are known as Mexican Merigolds.

    10. Every year during the week of Nov. 2, parts of Mexico are swarmed with monarch butterflies that travel a staggering 3,000 miles all the way from Canada. The belief that the spirits of the dead could return in the form of hummingbirds or butterflies goes back all the way to the Aztecs, so it’s not hard to see why the monarch would become a key decorative motif

Hi my name is Milica and today I will be telling you a few fun facts on about Day of the dead and Diwali. I think that we should start of with Day of the dead because it is celebrated first.

Day of the dead: 1. Dia de los Muertos is often celebrated on November. 1st as a day to remember the children who have passed away, and November 2nd to honor adults. Today Dia de los Muertos is celebrated mostly in Mexico.

    2. The ofrenda is often the most recognized symbol of Dia de los Muertos. This temporary altar is way to honor their loved one’s that have sadly passed away and provide them what they need on their journey. They place down pictures of the deceased along of the things that belonged to them and objects that serve as reminder of their lives. and some parts in Central America.
    3. Monarch butterflies play a role in Dia de los Muertos because they believed that they hold the spirits of the departed. This belief stems from the fact that the first Monarchs arrive in Mexico for the winter each fall now on Nov. 1st, witch coincides with Dia de los Muertos.

    4. The flowers that resemble Dia de los Muertos are called Marigolds. The reason that Marigolds are one’s to represent Dia de los Muertos is because the yellowness in them represents sunshine and happiness.

    5. On Dia de los Muertos they share lots of candy. But their most popular candy to sell are sugar sculls.

Well there you have it, those are all of my Day of the dead facts but now we are going to move onto the second topic and that is Diwali that is celebrated only 5 to 6 days later after Dia de los Muertos.

Diwali: 1. Diwali is a Hindu celebration also known as ( The festival of lights) which is technically the Indian new year. It is a very big deal in India.
