Good Thursday Morning!
v The Burnaby Public Library has the best summer challenge for you! Check out the attached poster and print it off for an adventurous scavenger hunt-like list you can engage with your children over the entire summer. There are lists of places to visit, things to do, look for and learn. This is such a thoughtful list, I’ll definitely be trying somethings out too!
v The Primary Care Network is hosting a DocTalk this Friday the 18th at 12-1 PM this week. Join Dr. Baldev Sanghera to discuss the latest information on the available Covid vaccines. There will also be a channel set up for Arabic translation provided by ISSofBC. Registration is required, click here to register and submit questions before hand to msahota@divisionbc.ca – for more information, check out the attached posters.
v Helping children develop emotional understanding requires repeated and intentional practice. Adults can support children’s development by helping them identify, label, and talk about emotions (source: Better Kid Care). Learn more @ www.feelingsfirst.ca
o What can you do to help young children process their feelings?
§ Ask them how they feel – “How are you feeling? It looks like you might be feeling sad.”
§ Talk about how others might feel – “Why do you think she was sad? How could you tell?”
§ Help them when they need to calm down – “Let’s take a deep breath together.”
§ Label and define feelings when words fail – “That feeling is called surprised.”
§ Explain that all feelings are okay, but not all behaviours – “It is okay to feel frustrated. It’s not okay to push your friend.”
Enjoy this glorious sunshine today!

Good Monday Morning!

v It Feels Good to Talk about Feelings – Discussing emotions can be hard for both adults and children, but it is important. Paying attention to your child’s feelings from birth is key to helping them develop their own understanding of emotions, as well as the emotions they see in others. As children grow older, mealtimes and bedtimes are a great opportunity to ask them about how they’re feeling and how their day went. Learn more at www.feelingsfirst.ca

Good Friday Morning!
v On May 27th the tragic discovery of the remains of 215 children in unmarked graves on the Kamloops Indian Residential School were found . Knowledge is power. Author Monique Gray Smith shares tips on both talking to kids about Residential Schools and how to prepare yourself as the adult to have these conversations. Please take a moment to watch her video Talking to kids about Residential Schools – YouTube. Every child matters.
v Words are powerful. Sometimes we don’t know what to say when our children are upset. I came across these wonderful phrases to the right of the arrow we can use to help support our little ones when they are in feelings.
o Stop crying. à I can see this is hard for you.
o You’re okay. à Are you okay?
o Be quiet. à Can you use a softer voice?
o Don’t hit. à Please be gentle.
o Stop yelling. à Take a deep breath, then tell me what happened.
o Don’t get upset. à It’s okay to feel sad.
o That’s enough. à Do you need a hug?
o I’m over this. à I’m here for you.

What does being present mean to a young child?

o Higher levels of resiliency
o More hopeful attitudes
o Better mental health
o More prosocial behaviours
o More positive feelings about themselves
v With this glorious sunshine, today would make the perfect day for a Teddy Bear’s picnic. It doesn’t have to be complicated (unless you want it to be) – make some peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with your little one, wash some strawberries or a sliced apple, a cookie or two and fill a big bottle of water. If you feel so inclined, bring some pretty tea cups – your little one will likely drink more water with a fancy cup, a blanket and of course, a couple teddy bears to join. Set up your picnic under a shady tree and voila! A Teddy Bear’s picnic.
