October has Arrived!

PLANTING DAFFODIL BULBS – We planted many daffodil bulbs that had been moved out of the garden bins around the school. The students had to dig holes deep enough to place a daffodil bulb into the bottom, then cover up the bulb with soil. The students were very engaged and they worked hard to get all of the bulbs planted so they can bloom next Spring! It was a collaborative afternoon with Mrs. Nielsen’s class involved as well! We have also been tidying up the garden bins on our side of the school and collecting leaves to top up the bins and protect the soil over the winter months.

BATS– We had a special guest from Douglas College come and teach us about many bat facts and myths and she brought in a special bat puppet to help us learn about certain parts of bats and what those parts do to help the bat live in its ecosystem. Brown bats are in danger and this is partly due to pollution, loss of habitat and a strange illness that is affecting them.  We need to work together to keep the brown bat population from going extinct! The students were able to make their own paper bag bat puppets to take home and teach their families about bats. What is your child able to recall about bats?

Terry Fox Run- We learned that Terry Fox was an 18 year old boy from Port Coquitlam, BC, who, when diagnosed with cancer, had to have his leg removed. After spending time in the children’s cancer ward at the hospital, Terry was determined to run across Canada and raise money for cancer research. He was determined to bring an end to the suffering cancer causes.  He was unable to complete his journey but his legacy and his determination to raise money continues today. WE all ran to commemorate Terry and his Marathon of Hope.

A Visit From Science World- Scientists from Science World came to teach us how significant weather events can have an effect on the plants and animals in certain ecosystems.  Weather events such as: forest fires, drought, heavy rains/flooding and heavy winds can have devastating effects on the animals and plants in the areas affected by these systems. We, as humans, have a responsibility to try to reduce our negative impacts on the environment and work to preserve and protect the lands and animals in our local areas. Students were given the chance to become a plant, animal, or weather system in a certain season (summer, fall winter or spring) and then act out what would happen if a certain weather system hit their ecosystem.

Noisy Reading- We continue to welcome families to our classroom on Fridays. Some students share an adult and some share reading with our classroom stuffies! All are welcome!

Story Workshop – We are building and developing our skills creating and writing stories. Through Story Workshop, students get to build their stories using loose parts within the classroom. Students built stories while focusing on characters, the story problem and solution. They then orally shared their stories with a couple of classmates.  We recorded the characters, problem and solution and students are invited to then write the entire story or keep this practice planning page for a later time.  Ask your child about the story they created!
