January 10, 2025 – Day 1

English 9H: 

Silent reading.

Remaining class time to catch up with all outstanding work including: character and vocab lists for ACC, ACC reflection from Dec 19th, grammar booklet from Jan 8th, creative writing prompts 1 & 2.

English 11CW (Pd 2 & 4):

Collect wind chime items. If you forgot your items today, please bring to flex on Tues AM.  We will be in the library next Tues and Thurs creating our wind chimes and writing the reflection that will accompany your project.

Finish reading TJP together as a class; discuss ending. Collect novels. If you missed today’s class, please finish reading the novel at home and bring your novel for collection Tues.

English 12: 

Class time provided to finish brainstorm and add quotes for planning of draft for “The Bet” process of writing assignment.

One on one conferences for Term 2 goal setting; we will continue these conferences in class on Tues. Students have class Tues and Thurs to complete the draft. Please come to flex time on Tues and/or Thurs if you need more time to get your work done.

FULL draft of your essay is due at the end of class Jan 16th (this is change from the original document which says it’s due at the end of the class on the 14th)****.

Jan 6 and 8, 2025 – General Update for All Classes

Thank you to Mr Terpening for coming in as a TTOC for me when I was home with my daughter Jan 6 and 8 while she was recovering from her recent surgery. 🙂

English 9H: 

Jan 6:

  • Class time to finish character and vocab lists from ACC Stave 5.
  • Creative writing prompt #1 (for Term 2) for portfolio: Describe your most serious physical injury, beginning with the healing process, and working backwards to how you became injured.

Jan 8: 

  • Grammar worksheet
  • CW Prompt #2 (for portfolio): What would be your worst nightmare? Focus on descriptive writing and using all five senses to make this nightmare come to life for me.

English 11CW (Pd 2): 

Jan 6: 

  • punctuation booklet
  • REMINDER: source items for your wind chime project – due on Fri (Jan  10)

Jan 8: 

  • Students must have read up to Ch 15 in TJP before Friday’s class

December 19, 2024 – Day 1

English 9H: 

Silent reading.

Finish Stave 5 in ACC and discuss developments in Scrooge’s character throughout the text.

Journal reflection (for portfolio entry #3): What are your thoughts on the novella as a whole? What did you like/not like? How are you feeling as we head into our own break to spend time with friends and family?

English 11CW (Pd 2): 

Ch 10-12 reading quiz. If you missed today’s class and your absence is unexcused, you have earned a zero for this assessment.

English 11CW (Pd 4):

December 17, 2024 – Day 1

English 9H: 

Work block – students have the entire period to catch up with their vocab and character lists for their portfolios. Beginning with Stave Four, students are encouraged to find a quote or quotes that use Dickens’ words to support their character descriptions. Don’t forget page numbers for your citations!

English 11CW (Pd 2 & 4):

Students who indicated Friday that they need extra time with their essay have this period to complete their composition. If you missed today’s class, and you need to finish off your essay, your last opportunity will be flex on Thursday (Dec 19). No class time will be given for this paper moving forwards. Incomplete essays will also be assessed at this time ,and your grade will reflect the work you put into this process to date.

HOMEWORK: All students, even if you were finishing your essay today,  must read Ch 10, 11 and 12 in The Jade Peony before class on Thurs. *** there will be a reading quiz on these three chapters so ensure you have done the reading ***

English 12: 

Othello final exam; students have all period to write. If you missed today’s class and your absence is not excused, you will earn a zero for this assessment.  If you missed today’s class and your absence is excused in the computer, email me ASAP to set up a time for you to make up an alternate assessment during the long flex on Jan 10/25.

December 13, 2024 – Day 1

English 9H: 

Silent reading.

Begin Stave Four in A Christmas Carol.

English 11CW (Pd 2 & 4):

In-class essay for The Jade Peony.

English 12: 

Mark Act 4 review sheet together as a class.

Hand out Othello exam review and discuss. OTHELLO FINAL EXAM IS TUESDAY, DECEMBER 17TH! Unexcused absences for this assessment will result in a zero.

December 11, 2024 – Day 1

English 9H: 

Finish reading Stave Three in ACC.

Remaining class time to update character and vocab lists.

English 11CW (Pd 2 & 4):

Lesson on proper essay structure with focus on how to write functional intro and concluding paragraphs; students were encouraged to take notes during this section of the lesson to keep for future reference. If you missed today’s class, you would benefit from copying notes from someone in the class.

Hand back outlines from Monday; students can update/finish/polish and outlines re-collected at the end of today’s class.

*** students will be writing in-class essays Fri, Dec 13th. You can have your outline and novel to support you while writing. Please bring a blue or black ink pen to write with for this composition.

English 12: 

Read Act 5, sc i & ii in Othello. Discuss over view of structure and outcome of the play.

*** there will be a final exam on Othello in class on Tues, Dec 17th. I will do a review class on Fri, Dec 13th. Exam will be closed book so reviewing this weekend will be beneficial. ****

 

December 9, 2024 – Day 1

English 9H: 

Story board assignments collected at the start of class.

Silent reading.

Read p. 39-54 in Stave Three in ACC whilst updating character and vocab lists.

English 11CW (Pd 2 & 4): 

Silent reading.

Overview how to fill in an essay outline correctly; remember, overwritten essay outlines will be confiscated and you will have to write the essay without the benefit of your planning.

Hand back brainstorms and transfer information succinctly to outlines. If you missed today’s class, you must come see me in flex Weds AM to get this step done as it is another graded component. 

Finish one-on-one conferences.

English 12: 

Read Act 4, sc 2-3 in Othello.

Act 4 review sheet – due at the end of the period. If you missed today’s class, come to flex Weds AM to get this sheet done, please. You will need 25 mins (or so) to get it done (and make sure you’ve completed reading Act 4!). 

December 6, 2024 – Day 1

English 9H: 

Silent reading.

Finish reading Stave Two of ACC.

Graphics analysis assignment (due Mon, Dec 9). If you missed today’s class, see criteria below to complete this assignment at home. Use the following link to access a blank story board you can print off: http://sd41blogs.ca/dubes/files/2024/12/Story-board-template-Eng-9H.docx

  • Using the blank story board sheet that has been handed out, choose what you feel are the MAIN points in Stave Two and draw them as scenes. This is much like creating a mini-graphic novel for Stave Two. You can add writing if you feel it’s necessary or helps your storyboard to be better understood.
  • You must use at least 6 boxes of the storyboard, but you are welcome to use both sides up to 12 boxes in total (but be sure you’re focusing on MAIN points)

Grading will be based on the following criteria:

  1. The scenes chosen, as they reflect your ability to analyze the main points that drive the plot forward.
  2. Neatness of your storyboard.
  3. Extra effort devoted to detail including colours.

English 11 CW (Pds 2 & 4): 

Extra class time given to continue working on brainstorms started on Tues. Students must now also add THREE sub-points to each of the three main points for why they’ve chosen their specific character as most intriguing.  Brainstorms collected at the end of the period.

Begin one-on-one conferencing to review Term 1 with me individually and set a goal together for your learning for Term 2.

English 12: 

Read Act IV, sc i in Othello.

December 3, 2024 – Day 1

Welcome to the start of Term 2! 🙂

English 9H: 

Silent reading.

Note taking: properly integrating and citing quotes in your writing; text manipulation and correctly using the ellipses. If you missed today’s class, please get these notes from a classmate to add to your book. You will need them for future reference on compositions.

Remaining class time to update character and vocab lists for portfolios.

English 11CW (Pd 2 & 4):

Silent reading.

In class brainstorming/analysis assignment; collected at the end of the period. If you missed today’s class, you must email ASAP to arrange to make this up in flex Thurs (Dec 5).

English 12: 

Silent reading.

Othello: mid-unit in class assessment.

November 29, 2024 – Day 1

The end of Term 1 is at 3:03pm today; all work must be submitted by this time and folx with I reports need to have resolved them by this time or an IE (insufficient evidence) will be on the Term 1 report card. Term 2 begins Tues, Dec 3rd!

English 9H:

Silent reading.

Organize portfolios for grading at end of term.

Begin reading Stave Two in ACC (p. 21-30).

English 11CW (Pd 2 & 4): 

Reading quiz at the start of class.

Read p. 129-151/p. 145-172 in TJP. There is an in-class analysis assignment on Tuesday that will include the entire novel up to this point so you must ensure you have this read before next day.

English 12: 

Read Act III, sc iii and iv in Othello. If you missed today’s class, please ensure you read these two scenes by next day. You will be completing an in-class assignment next day that will relate to the play covering Act 1-3, inclusive.
