Literacy Week

We had a great week full of fun activities to celebrate Literacy Week!

We dressed up, participated in fun library activities and trivia, had a Guest Reader from the SFU Men’s Basketball team come to read us a story (and sign team posters!), watched the teachers perform a Reader’s Theatre at our assembly and decorated our class door!

Thank you to all the teachers, parents and students who helped to make this week so successful!

Mapping

This term we have started to work on reading and creating maps using legends and symbols.  As a class we created a map of our school grounds!  Next we will work on maps of our neighborhoods!

Students creating a map of our school grounds, including a legend of symbols and a compass rose
Our class map of our school grounds. Each student creating a symbol within the legend to represent a feature on the map! We are learning that it is important that the symbol in the legend matches what we see in the map so that it makes reading the map easy and clear!

Our Awesome Box Projects!

It was a lot of fun today in Division 8 as we began to “Think Outside the Box” and create our Box Projects!

Yesterday, we read two books, “Not A Box” by Antoinette Portis and “Not a Box” by Jane Yolen and Chris Sheban. These books sparked our imaginations and got us thinking and planning what we could do with our own boxes.

Today we unleashed our creativity and got to work. We can’t wait to see what the end result will be in the next few days!
Through this activity, we are learning to plan our projects, practice growth mindset skills that we have learned about (I can try new things, I can persevere, I can modify/change my plan if something isn’t working quite right) and reflect on our experience.

Remembrance Day Poem

This week our class collaborated to write this incredible acrostic poem!  The children then presented it to the school at our Remembrance Day Assembly.  I was so proud of the work they did both in the classroom to create this piece and the mature way they were able to present this to the entire Stoney Creek Community!  Way to go Division 8!

Science -Matter Experiments

Our class has been learning about different states of matter and how matter can change either physically or chemically.  We have been doing a variety of experiments in class to demonstrate how these changes happen in real life.

Here we are experimenting with liquids and making them race!.  We were experimenting to see if each liquid is the same or whether the thickness or texture would affect how the liquid moves.  We came to the conclusion that clearer, lighter liquids like water move and change shape more quickly than thicker liquids like syrup or ketchup.

Here we are mixing solids and liquids to create a  gas and to create a chemical reaction.  When we mixed the baking soda and the vinegar it created a gas and filled the balloon with air!  The children were excited to see this chemical change right before their eyes!

Class Charter

Our students have worked hard to create their class charter.  These are the ideas and rules that were agreed upon by all the students in Division 8. The goal of a class charter is to help the children understand that as members of a class community, they have rights and responsibilities and that we all must work together to make our classroom community thrive!

Fall Art

Fall Leaf Art – Mixed Media

The children collected leaves from our school grounds, traced them, rubbed them and coloured using crayon.  The backgrounds were created using paint.  Using real leaves helped the children to create realistic images!

Warm and Cool Pumpkins

The children learned about warm vs. cool colours in this fall art project.  As a class we discussed the difference between the colours and the way warm and cool colours may connect to the way we feel.  We also discussed how some colours may complement one another.

The children were asked to create a warm or cool pumpkin using pastel, and then to create their painted backgrounds using the other.

Welcome!

Welcome to our new class Blog!  I am just in the process of learning how to navigate this new technology…. I hope to have posts soon!  Thanks for your patience.
