Monday April 6

Happy Monday!  I had a dream that we were back at school and you monkeys were on the roof of the portable throwing water balloons at everyone!  Even in Online Learning, you keep me laughing.

Welcome to our first official week of Online Learning!  Thank you to everyone for your wonderful phone calls.  It was so nice to hear your voices.  And thank you for taking the time to familiarize yourselves with Teams.  I know that’s a big task for us to ask you to do by yourselves.  Always let us know if you have questions or something isn’t working right!

Here are your jobs for today:

Go to Teams
Read the “Daily Outline” for today, April 6
Do what it says!

Finding the Daily Outline on Teams will become your place to start each day.  For now, I’ve posted it here as well.  Keep an eye out today for an email from me to parents and students on expectations regarding Online Learning.  Grade 7s – you should also  be getting an email from Mr. Cohen about band.

Also, the Homework Board here on my blog is updated to help you keep track of all your school due dates and ongoing activities.

Have a magnificent Monday everyone!

Daily Outline – April 6

Friday April 3

Bonjour!  Ca va? C’est vendredi!  Fantastique!

We did it everyone!  We got through our first week of transitioning to online learning.  I am looking forward to using Teams more next week when everyone gets more comfortable with it.  If you haven’t been figuring out Teams yet, please do so today and over the weekend.

Band

  • Practice an instrument for 30 minutes
  • Find a symphony or choral video that interests you from Vancouver Pops.  See if you can hear each individual instrument as they play

https://www.youtube.com/user/VanOrchestraClub/videos

Drama

Practice your monologue!  Send me an email with the name of the monologue you would like to choose by Wednesday April 15th.

PE

  • Pauls
    • 1 minute wall sit
    • 2 inch worms
    • 3 clock lunges

Community Circle

Find the Community Circle post in the General channel of Teams.  Hit “Reply” and make ONE reply.  Don’t start a new post!  Let’s keep this organized and collapsible.  In your reply, tell us:

  • your temperature check number from 1-10 and a reason why
  • who you are giving a beautiful bouquet to.  (This can be anyone who has made a difference for you over the past few weeks – a friend, family member, front line worker, grocery store cashier, neighbour etc)
  • how are you feeling about online learning?

Math

Riddle me this!  A small number of cards has been lost from a complete pack. If I deal among four people, three cards remain. If I deal among three people, two remain and if I deal among five people, two cards remain. How many cards are there?

Optional Science listening

This is an episode from the podcast Science Vs. called “Coronavirus: Are Young People Safe.”  It is full of really good science facts and information if you are interested.  If you’ve had enough Covid-19 talk, you don’t have to listen!  PARENTAL ADVISORY – this episode is great, but if you start exploring other Science Vs episodes, there may be some inappropriate language.

Have a fantastic Friday everyone! 😀

Thanks For The Chats!

That’s all the phone calls from me for today!  It was so nice getting to talk to about 2/3 of you.  If you didn’t get a phone call or if you got a voicemail, I will be calling you tomorrow afternoon.

Thank you for using the General section on Teams appropriately for asking questions and helping each other.  That is what it is for!  You can always send me an email if you ever have any questions.

I am looking forward to connecting with everyone in our new online world!

Thursday April 2

Bonjour tous  le monde!  Aujourd’hui c’est jeudi le deuxième avril.  Quel temps fait-il ce matin?  C’est un peu nuageux ici.

Good news everyone!  Teams is up and running!  You can find the Teams app through your Office 365 apps.  Go to the school site – click on Office 365 – login in with your 365 account – click on Teams.    There is a desktop app of Teams as well that you could try downloading and logging into with your school account (not sure if that works for students)  Check out my video and get a feel for Teams.

Knock knock!
Who’s there?
Ms.
Ms. who?
It’s Ms. Baird!  Answer the phone!

I can’t wait to make some phone calls today.  If you see an unknown or blocked number this afternoon it might be me!

French

Find and download the pdf “Clothing Vocab” under Files in the French channel on Teams.

Science

The other day we looked at the chemical reaction oxidation by observing an apple turn brown.  Another “browning” reaction is the Maillard reaction.

Video:

What is the Maillard Reaction?

A more complex explanation:

Have a thrilling Thursday everyone! 😀

Update

Good afternoon, everyone

How is everyone doing?  I miss you all dearly!

I am so happy with all the positive feedback regarding the blog posts so far!  I’m glad you are starting to access our online learning and that you have productive activities to stimulate your minds.  Remember that for this week, the activities are opportunities for you to create new routines and familiarize yourself with working independently.  Don’t stress about assignments and marks.  You are welcome to access other resources put out by the district as well or instead.  We are taking things slow.

Please remember to always use your school/office365 accounts and emails for everything school related and to give an appropriate title to documents when you share them – It’s hard for me to find your work later when the title is “document 5.”  It’s important to always send me emails from your student office 365 email unless you cannot access it and are asking for help.

Teams is set up for our class as well.  Ms. Wilson and I both have access, so everything you need from both of us will be on your Teams – Division 1.  I will open Team’s access to everyone tomorrow so you can start getting used to the system.  There are many tutorials and instructions under the “help” section on the left hand side that I encourage you to check out.  I’ve created a practice assignment to get used to what handing in work is going to look like.  I’ve also created a meeting time for 11:30am on Friday April 10th for a virtual community circle.  This is an optional meeting if you can have access to a computer or device at that time.  One of the first things we will do on Teams is a Digital Citizenship quest to explore being responsible online users.

I will be calling EVERYONE individually starting tomorrow afternoon.  If I do not get through to everyone I will also call on Friday.  This call is for students and parents if possible.

Looking forward to hearing your voices!  Have a wonderful afternoon.

Ms. Baird

Buckingram Spring Break Posts

Tuesday March 31

Good morning Division 1!

Update:  Thank you so much for all the wonderful photos of math and art!  Some people have been asking about how to submit assignments.  I’m getting Microsoft Teams all set up currently.  You can find it as one of your Office 365 apps through the Buckingham website.  When it’s ready to go, there will be specific spots for you to submit assignments directly to.  That way my email won’t get cluttered with your wonderful work!  For now, showing me your work can be a choice.  If you would like to share your work to show me your effort or to receive some feedback, feel free to share or email what you’ve done.  It’s totally ok if you don’t!  We are all transitioning to a new normal right now and the last thing I want is for you to stress about homework.

Online learning means you get to be more independent and do what works best for you and your family.  You can come check my blog at any time and do the activities right away, in the evening, or throughout the day.  There’s no need for you to stick to “school hours.” I know we’re all living different lives right now!   My job right now is to provide you opportunities to continue learning.  Do what works best for you and your family!

Another note – I will be reaching out to each and every one of you on Thursday or Friday.  This could be by email, a phone call, or even a video chat!  Send me an email if you have a preferred time or method of communication.  More details to come on that tomorrow.

Music

It’s your music block today!  Try listening to some new tunes for some music appreciation 🙂

French

I’ve created a classroom in the French learning app Duolingo!  I have sent an email to your Office 365 school account with your personal login information.  Please use this to access our classroom.  I have created an assignment for you to complete 30 minutes of French by next Tuesday.  You can do any section or lesson that looks interesting to you!  Play around with the app and get used to it.  You will need to download the free Duolingo app from any app store.  The logo looks like this: Duolingo: Learn Languages Free - Apps on Google Play

PE

Pauls!

  • 30 second running in place
  • 10 burpees
  • 30 second boat pose/ “V” hold
  • 10 squats

Health

Help your family cook today, or even be tonight’s head chef!  Create a healthy meal or snack for your family that fits with our healthy eating learning.  Photos of your delicious creations or even recipes are always appreciated!  I can find a place to share them with everyone.

Language Arts

Read for 30 minutes

Science

We are going to look at some chemical changes.  Here is an easy experiment you can do at home if you have an apple!  Cut the apple into sections and observe what it looks like. Let the apple sit for ten minutes and then examine it again. There will be an observable chemical change while you were waiting. Watch this oxidation video to understand the processes that caused the apple to change.

Want more chemical reactions?  Try one of these experiments!  (I highly recommend the elephant toothpaste! – Do it outside…)  Always remember to use proper safety protection and procedures.  And always ask your parents for permission and supervision!

Have a terrific Tuesday everyone! 😀

Monday March 30

Bonjour tous le monde!  Aujour d’hui c’est lundi le trente mars.  Comment allez-vous?  Moi, je suis très fatiguée!  J’ai besoin de plus de café!

Let’s  start with some math!

Grade 7s:

Finding the circumference of a circle.  Review video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39OHW0nYfN0

Do your work in a designated math book or keep your papers organized in your binder.  Use graph paper if possible.  Set up your page neatly with your name and date in the top right corner and the title “Finding Circumference at Home” as the title.

  • Find 10 circles in your house of various sizes.
  • Use a ruler to measure the diametre.
  • How can you know that you are measuring the centre of the circle?
  • Use the measured diametre to calculate the circumference
  • Take a photo of your work when finished

Grade 6s:

Types of triangles.  Review Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1k0G-Y41jRA

Do your work in a designated math book or keep your papers organized in your binder.  Use graph paper if possible.  Set up your page neatly with your name and date in the top right corner and the title “Drawing Different Triangles” as the title.

  • Write the definitions of an Equilateral, Isosceles, and Scalene triangle if you don’t already have this in your notes.
  • Draw 2 of each type of triangle (2 Equilateral, 2 Isosceles , 2 Scalene)
  • Measure and label the lengths of the sides of each triangle.
  • In your house, find at least 1 example of each of the 3 types of triangles.  Write them down or take a photo
  • Take a photo of your work when finished

Recess! Take a break.  Have a healthy snack

Mindful Moments (10-20 minutes) – Grab a pen, paper or drawing book, and pencil crayons.  Find a quiet place.  Listen to the music.  Close your eyes. Take 10 deep slow breaths.  Open your eyes.  With your pen, close your eyes again and make a continuous line drawing on your paper for 30 seconds- draw swirls and zig zags, whatever you feel, don’t lift your pen until the very end.  Open your eyes.  Colour the different solid sections of your line drawing.

Music – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKHBIAdBvZ4
