Bonjour Division 9 families!

This short week was full of fun activities!

In Math we worked on comparing numbers with greater-than and lesser-than symbols, ordering numbers, and finding 10 more or 10 less. We worked on skip counting, and even did dot-to-dots by skip counting.

Our sound of the week was the sound [o] with spellings with “o”, “au” and “eau.” We played with letter tiles, played Tic-Tac-Mots and Tic-Tac-Phrases for pronunciation as well as a new BINGO-like game called “Lance et lis” (toss and read). We also kept ourselves busy with a giant word cloud that was added to daily as we thought of more and more words with the sound [o].

We were lucky to avoid the rain on Thursday for our first activity with our buddy class, Mme Lam’s premiere années. We read a story to imagine what a garden might grow, then went out to our garden boxes to weed and till, and to sketch our ideas of what to plant. We will be working in the garden with our buddies throughout the year, and will hopefully get to see plants grow through all seasons.

In Science, we observed the diversity of leaves to begin a unit on biodiversity. We began a “know, wonder, learned” chart to share what we already know about biodiversity and what we wonder. As we learn through the coming weeks, we will add to the “learned” column.

After many art lessons’ worth of time, focus, and effort, our self-portraits are finally complete! They turned out wonderfully! What a talented bunch of artists we have in Division 9!

I sent home students’ reading logs (“Mon journal de lecture”) to add to over the weekend. Students are expected to read a book or a chapter and record the main idea in a picture or words, and to return their paper on Monday to check in. I will be changing the tasks (ie: writing a summary of the main character, recording interesting words, etc.) of the reading logs as we go.

We will have our dictée for the sound [o] on Monday.

Next Friday is a provincial Professional Development Day, so there will be no school for students.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! Stay warm.
