March 2-6

Hello families!

An example of using base-ten blocks to model 253 divided by 4.

This week in Math we worked on division of three-digit numbers with remainders.  We started by using base-ten blocks to break up three-digit numbers into equal groups.  This worked well for many learners.  Later in the week, we tackled the long-anticipated long division.  I was very impressed with the focus and perseverance through this tricky new material!  We worked through a whole-class lesson, worked on individual practice, and some students loaned support as peer teachers.  Yay!  I am so proud of this group!

We worked on Lit Circles final projects, including drawings, imaginary report cards and modelling clay figurines.  I am looking forward to seeing all the completed works next week!

In French, we learned about Carnaval de Québec.  Students used the iPads to research information on various symbols and events of Carnaval and shared their learning with the class.

In Science, we worked on Rube Goldberg machines in a flurry on Thursday, with promising results!  We will continue workshopping these machines in more hands-on learning next week.

We were fortunate again this week to have a special guest share with us on Tuesday.  April Strickland, the Indigenous Elementary Resource Coordinator, visited our class to share a collection of prints in Coast Salish design.  She taught us about four key shapes in Coast Salish art: the circle, the oval, the trigon, and the extended crescent.  We had an art gallery walk and discussion, and then students had the opportunity to create their own images inspired by the works and the four key shapes.  On Friday, students worked on spindle whorl designs inspired by the work of artist Susan Point.  April will be visiting our class again soon to support with a following art activity.

In Restorative Justice, we discussed healthy vs. unhealthy aspects of relationships.  The discussion was rich, as students were able to talk seriously about some fairly complex topics.

On Friday, we had the school-wide Jump Rope for Heart event, with groups of house team members rotating through jump rope stations.  Over the past month, Glenwood has fundraised over $1200 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, exceeding our goal of $750!  Amazing!  Thank you for your generous support, Glenwood!

Term 2 reports will go home next ThursdayNext Friday is the last day of school before Spring Break.

Enjoy your weekend!
