Remembrance Day

After reading the story, “The Peace Book” by Todd Parr, we have been having discussions about what peace is.

Students did a wonderful job creating poppies and writing down what peace meant to them.

Tomorrow we will have our virtual Remembrance Day Assembly. Please check your e-mails for the link.

Happy Halloween!!!

Name practice

A few weeks ago we read “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom” a story about the letters in the alphabet. Learning  letter names is part of the Kindergarten curriculum.

Children’s names are the most special and important word for them. So those are the first letters we have been working on.

Students have been doing many activities focusing on:

  • learning the letters in their names
  • learning that their name always starts with uppercase and the rest are lower case
  • recognizing their names and their friends’ names
  • comparing the letters in their name to their friends’ names
  • forming their own names with manipulatives and through print
  • connecting the letters in their names to the letter sounds we are learning

D.E.A.R

Dear families,

On Monday, we will be getting together with our house teams and participating in D.E.A.R (Drop everything and read).  Your child can wear the colour shirt of their house team! If you are not sure what colour team your child is on, please look at the Halloween notice I sent home on Friday.

Thank you,

Ms. Amiri

Exploring plants in our local community

Today we went back to Byrne creek to take a closer look at all the local plants.

Thank you to Ms. Willis for teaching us about all the different plants surrounding us and uses of plants among Indigenous  peoples.

We learned a lot and had a wonderful time!

Coho Salmon Release

Today we had the experience of walking to Byrne creek to release about 5000 coho salmon, supplied by Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

We walked up stream along the creek and were lucky to have some stream keepers talk to us about some of the plants in our environment and give us some information about salmon.

Thank you to parent volunteers who went with us! Students had a great time!

Spring Art

This was inspired by painter Wassily Kandinsky. One piece of artwork he is famous for  is “Squares with Concentric Circles.” Students used bright oil pastels to design their flowers.

This was inspired by painter Georgia O’Keeffe. She was best known for her paintings of large-scale flowers. Students used tempera paint to create their beautiful flowers.

In class field trip

Today we had fun transforming our classroom into a laboratory and becoming botanists!

We created oxygen, observed the veins on some lettuce, learned about chlorophyll, and dissected a seed.

We also got to take home a terrarium that we each created, with soil and a seed that we watered and gave carbon dioxide to.

Thank you again PAC for this exciting experience!
