What makes the arctic an extreme environment?

What makes the arctic an extreme environment?

facts My thinking
On the tundra, it is usually cold, often windy, and there is little rain.

The soils are frozen most of the year.

At the North and South Poles, the sun circles above the horizon for half the year, then takes a day or so to set, followed by several weeks of twilight and maybe three months of full darkness before spring approaches. At the Arctic and Antarctic Circles, there are 24 hours of sunlight and 24 hours of twilight/night at their respective solstices; the rest of the year has the same seasonal variations in sunlight as most of the world, but to a much greater degree. In between, there are extended periods of sunlight and darkness, longer toward the poles, separated by periods of day/night or day/twilight cycles.

I think that the Arctic makes a extreme environment because people need lots of warm gear just to go outside.

It must be hard to live there if you cannot grow food there.

The light cycle is interesting but when it’s dark it would be hard to hunt and find and gather plants for food.

what makes deserts a extreme environent?

Notes

My thinking

  • they lose more moisture than they receive
  • Mars is the only planet in the solar system on which deserts have been identified.
  • the red color of many sand deserts is a result of the occurrence of laterite. Deserts may contain great amounts of mineral resources over their entire surface. This occurrence in minerals also determines the color.

  • Why don’t people use deserts as a vast energy source?
  • Why do people leave material from ghost towns un-touched?
  • Why are many deserts popular for vacation areas

What makes the sea an extreme environment?

Notes Thoughts
*Water pressure get’s greater, the lower you are under the sea.

*You can’t breathe under water.

*Fish have adapted to live in sea pressure.

* How do fish live so far deep under the sea?

*How does water pressure form?

Space is a extreme environment

 Notes My Thinking
Why is space a extreme environment?

  • Because you need oxygen to survive and space does not have oxygen.
  • Also the sun is in space and if you get to close to it you might boil to death!
  • Also there are planets like Venus which has poison gases.

Fun Fact! Did you know that 100 Earths could fit inside Jupiter’s red storm.

Connection

Neil Armstrong went to the moon and it took 3 days to get there.

Question

What’s so extreme about space?

Answer

What’s so extreme?!  What’s extreme about space is you need a space suit and it has to have lots of oxygen.

That is what makes space a extreme environment!

what makes a trench an extreme environment

           Notes      My thinking
There is no sunlight in each and every trench so when you are trying to get some where you don`t know where you are going.
In a trench there is really high water pressure so the air gets thinner and at some point you explode.  What makes high water pressure?
In a trench the water is really cold so it is hard to be warm.

What makes earthquakes an extreme environment?

Notes

My Thoughts

  •   The strongest earthquakes only last 2-3 minutes but can level entire cities.

  • Tsunamis are caused by earthquakes.
  •   That is dangerous because lots of people can be killed by all the falling debris and cracks in the earth.

Tahsin’s Notes

What makes space an extreme environment?

                My Notes                 My Thinking
*Going to another planet would put too much pressure on you, so you would not be able to move to far in Space and it is a extreme environment   *On other planets the air or the temperature is really dangerous for example Pluto is extremely cold.

*We don’t even know what is out there because it is so dangerous no has ever roamed to far from Earth

So space is like Earth but it is like 100000 times more dangerous. There even is no water in space and probably nobody roams to far from Earth because there are aliens!

Kailyn’s Notes and My thinking for volcanoes

Notes

  • Lava glows red and it sizzles and it could even melt a car!
  • Volcanoes are vents, or openings to the earth.
  • When a volcano blows its top ash rocks fly through the air and on to the ground.

 My Thinking

  • How hot are volcanoes when they don’t blow their tops?
  • Where does the lava made of? Is it made out of gasoline?
  • How hot can lava be if it could melt a car?

MAX’S EPIC FACT’S ABOUT MARS

It is so far away it would take a couple months to get there (unless your ship has a hyperdrive XD) I wonder if people will ever live on mars.
Mars is about half the size of our planet earth. I wonder if mars ever had life on it.
Mars has very dangerous weather including giant storms. I Wonder if aliens are on mars.

Caity What makes space an extreme envirorment?

Notes

Some of the challenges humans face in space is no air, the freezing environment and not enough fuel.

Also in space you never know what planets and dangerous creatures out there in the galaxy.

You have to wear a space suit and helmet with the tanks of air filled up to the top and maybe a few other astronauts.

My Thinking

I wonder how much life is actually out there?

I wonder how many planets are in space?

I wonder if they will make people able to live on mars.
