Division Five had some new members join our class…..55 Chum salmon! Our salmon eggs are developing in a special classroom incubator. We provide cold, clean water and oxygen for the salmon eggs to grow and develop. Eventually, we will be feeding the salmon to get them ready for their release into a local stream.

As the salmon grow, we will learn about the life cycle of Pacific salmon, including, what we call them at each stage of development, their physical characteristics and how they move. We also learn about salmon habitat and how salmon are sensitive to changes in their environment.

“Salmonids in the Classroom” is supported and funded by Fisheries and Oceans Canada in partnership with the Burnaby School District. Your child will be learning about salmon stewardship and making a difference for salmon and the community.

September has been a busy month for Division Five. We have made new friends, said hello to old ones and shared our thoughts with one another about the new school year. Division Five helped to raise funds for Terry Fox and ran in his honour on September 25th.  We proudly kept Terry’s dream alive. On September 29th, we participated in Orange Shirt Day to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and to recognise that Every Child Matters. After reading the story of Phyllis Webstad, who had her orange shirt removed when she entered residential school, and Shin-Chi’s Canoe we had the opportunity to have discussions around reconciliation.

This year, Thursday is our Library day. Students can sign out 2 books per week. Please remember to use your library book bag and to return books the following Thursday. We will have Physical Education on Tuesday and Wednesday. Division 5 students have Music on Monday and Thursday.
