Friday May 29th

Hello and Happy Friday Div. 5!

Check out our lovely new rainbow crosswalk!! So exciting! <3

Yesterday your families should have received an email outlining what to expect for June 1st! For those of you returning you will be split into two cohorts based on last names.

      • A-L last names will be in the Monday/Tuesday cohort
      • M-Z last names will be in the Thursday/Friday cohort

Please make sure you take a look at both of the letters! It has important information for your family to know and understand before you return in June!

Next week will be the first week that some of us will have in-class learning and others will continue with distance learning! Be patient and kind with yourself and your family! It’s going to be different for all of us! At this time I’m not sure if what zoom and team events we will have next week. Make sure you check the schedule on the top of the general page for updates! I will have a better idea of what I can schedule for the week on Monday!

Today there is a new figurative language assignment all about personification!

Check out your individual math team for a numeracy activity!

Where you able to find any bees or other pollinators this week? Check out these lovely photos from some Div. 5 Scientists!

Have a lovely weekend Goobers!

Thursday May 28th

Good morning, Div. 5,

Today we have a read aloud at 10:15am!

Our third term has been so different than we ever could have imagined. I am so glad we have been able to stay connected in many different ways.

We have many friends, classmates, and teachers that we haven’t been able to see for a long time. For today, we would like you to create a special message for your little buddy class! You might want to remind our little buddies that we miss them and hope they are feeling well and happy. You could:

  • record yourself reading a picture book (just like Ms. Carley has done)
  • create a poster/drawing/art
  • write a letter
  • create a card
  • take a special photo to send
  • share your best wishes in another way

Once you send your video, photo, or creation to me, I will send it to Ms. Kim to share with her class. Thank you for sharing your leadership and care with our little friends in Division 11.

Keep on Reading!

Spend at least 20 minutes reading today! Pick up a book and find a comfortable spot! Be on the look out for similes, metaphors and hyperboles! If you don’t have anything to read at home you can always check out Epic Reading!

Currently on Epic Div.5 has read an AMAZING 1271 books!!!! You’ve also read for over 475 hours!!! Wow!

If you’re looking for a new book, one of our classmates has recommended a newer series called The Terrible Two! This is a great series about a pair of pranksters. You might recognize one of the authors Jory John, he also wrote some of Ms.Yee’s favourites, The Bad Seed and The Good Egg!

Wednesday May 27th

Good morning, Div. 5 Scientists!

Sorry for the later than usual post of today’s assignments but it was because of exciting events at UHE! Our RAINBOW CROSSWALK is being painted today!!!!!! Here’s how it is looking at this moment!

Start your morning with this stunning video: The story of Flowers

Today our mystery science is: How do bees make honey?

  • At UHE, we have been busy bees trying to create a pollinator garden with pollinator hotels for our roof! Even though that project has been delayed, we can still start our learning about the importance of pollinators! There are so many different pollinators on Burnaby mountain! Can you see some today visiting flowers? What are their favourite flowers? What can you learn about pollinators today?
  • Check out your teams assignment for our reflection and extensions!

Check out your math channel for some numeracy activities!

Tuesday May 26th

Greetings Div.5

We have a read aloud at 10:15 am today! I hope you can join! I am heading into the school today, so I might not reply to you as promptly as I have been. Please remember to be patient & kind, try to problem solve or ask your peers for support!!

Today is Tuesday, so that means it’s inquiry time! How is your PowerPoint coming? Have you looked at the self-assessment rubric yet? It is posted in the assignment #4!

There is another figurative language worksheet for today! This one is only one page and asks you to identify whether a phrase is a simile or metaphor!

Lastly, it’s important for us to stay moving, you can check out this link for a guided workout!

Monday May 25th

Hello Div.5

I hope you all had a lovely weekend! Today we have a class meeting at 11am on zoom! I hope you can make it! 😊

  • There are two new assignments posted today in our classroom Team! The first is our third mindfulness journal. Today being Monday and a fresh start to our week, I’d like you to try and start your day practicing being mindful. This entry combines a little writing and some art!
  • The second assignment is taking our beloved Guess Who game and going digital with it! The more categories you can come up with the better!!
  • Lastly please check out your grade specific math Team for your math assignment for today and Tuesday!

Just a heads up, this week’s distancing learning might look a little different than previous weeks as your teachers prepare for students to return June 1st! There is a lot to do in preparation for students and staff to come back to UHE! There might be times where we are unable to reply to you as promptly as we have been. Remember to be patient, try and problem solve yourself, ask your peers for support, and stay calm!! Be kind to yourself. Be patient with yourself. Be kind to your family. Be patient with your family. This whole situation we’ve been experiencing over the last few months has been difficult in so many different ways. I just ask you to remember to be kind and patient, we’ll get through this!!!

Have a wonderful Monday Div. 5!

We have a new figurative language assignment posted! See how you can find figurative language in your book club books! Try and read today for 30 minutes or more!

You can check your math teams for a new assignment!

Your teachers will be at the school today, so we might take a little longer than usual to get back to you. Please be patient, try your best to problem solve and help your classmates.

Wednesday May 20th

Good morning Div. 5 Scientists!

Today there is a read aloud at 10am for all that are interested!!

Your science mystery for today is, can animals laugh?

  • Watch the video!
  •  Answer the reflection questions form on teams!
  • Try an extension:

Try this experiment. Tell a friend or family member a joke — and laugh out loud when you get to the funny part. Now tell another friend or family member the same joke — but don’t laugh. Scientists say that people often laugh when they see someone else laughing. Do you think scientists are right about that? (If you need a joke, here’s our favorite: What’s orange and sounds like a parrot? (A carrot).)

You can check out our next figurative language lesson: hyperboles!

Last Sunday, May 17th was International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia Day (IDAHAT Day). Usually Burnaby School District hosts an IDAHAT breakfast, which some of UHE’s diversity club got to attend. This year, the event is virutal and open to all K-12 students and families. This year’s IDAHAT Reimagined event will be May 22nd from 10-11:30. Please see the letter below for more information about how to register. Please feel free to share this letter with anyone.

Today we have our class meeting for all that can attend on Zoom at 11am. Please check the post on Teams for more information!

It’s Tuesday, so that means you can continue to work on your Inquiry project. I’m just finalizing a checklist for you, look for that to be added to the 4th assignment shortly.

Make sure you check out your grade specific math team for your next math assignment!

As always continue to work through your assignments! I received so wonderful emails from you! Make you check your inbox for a response!

Lastly there is a free broadcast of a new family opera, Flight of the Hummingbird on today at 10 am. It is 45 minutes long. It is a beautiful story and I can’t wait to see it performed in a new way!

This is presented by Pacific Opera Victoria and Vancouver Opera. You can watch here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ld4hY00uRgk&feature=youtu.be

Thursday May 14th

Hello Div. 5!

Have you checked out the weekly Zoom and Team Meeting schedule on the Teams general page yet? Here’s the schedule for next week! Note Monday is a holiday and our Class Meeting has moved to Tuesday at 11! There’s also one read aloud scheduled for Thursday! Today there is read aloud as well at 10:15 if you are interested!

Today, we are going to start an exploration of a famous artist, Georgia O’Keeffe.

Creating art in the style of Georgia O’Keefe:

  • Either find a photo online, or take your own photo of a flower (or choose one of her paintings to re-create)
  • Zoom waaaay in (bug’s eye view!) to find the subject for your art. If you took a photo, you can literally zoom in. If you have an image, you can frame it, like this image from “The Helpful Art Teacher”
  • Don’t include the stems or background in your art
  • Try to make sure the petals of the flower touch many edges
  • Draw in pencil first! Then colour with the medium of your choice (pencil crayon, pastel, water colour, paint)

Here are a few directed art videos, in case you want a little more support:

– poppies

– parts of a flower

We have a letter writing activity for you that you can find on the Teams assignment page. It is titled “Literacy – Email Letter Writing.”

Additionally your second Mindfulness Journal is posted on Teams as well!

Remember to find balance in the activities you do. Complete what works for your family! I hope you all have a lovely long weekend!!!
