In Division 10 we have been working on building our “brain stamina” for reading and writing activities.

We started the year with being able to work INDEPENDENTLY with reading/writing activities for only 2 minutes ….

In March we were at 15 minutes as a class!

This means that all the students in our class can sit independently for 15 minutes and be engaged with reading and writing!!!!!!!!

My Suggesstion:

  • In addition to the literacy activities that I post weekly, and the Raz-Kids online program, in which you will be guiding/supporting your children …..
  • Have your children work on Independent reading and writing activities daily if possible!
  • This will help our students continue to build their stamina
  • AND will you give you a 15 minute break during the day 😊

“Read to Self”: What this looks like

  • Click on the picture and read it with your child (they should be very familiar with the expectations as we do this daily in our class)
  • Set a timer for you child
  • Your child has to be following all the expectations (Example: reading the whole time, staying in one spot etc.)
  • Let your child choose the spot they want to sit, they should feel comfortable and this should be an enjoyable task (Example: they can lay on the couch, lean against a wall etc.)
  • Give your child several books to read (the more choices the better – and the longer they stay engages). Suggestion: add the books that I sent home in March to their pile of books
  • Move up the minutes: after your child has been successful reading at 15 minutes for a few days move to 16, 17, 18 , 19, 20 minutes
  • If you are able – it would be great if you could join your child and read during this time too! Maybe the whole family can join?

“Work on Writing”: What this looks like

  • Click on the picture and read it with your child (they should be very familiar with the expectations as we do this daily in our class)
  • Set a timer for you child
  • Your child has to be following all the expectations (Example: reading the whole time, staying in one spot etc.)
  • Let your child choose the spot they want to sit, they should feel comfortable and this should be an enjoyable task (Example: they can lay on the couch, lean against a wall etc.)
  • Provide your child with a journal (if you don’t have a journal – some pieces of paper stapled together will do)
  • Move up the minutes: after your child has been successful writing at 15 minutes for a few days move to 16, 17, 18 , 19, 20 minutes

**REMEMBER**: all students are at different levels in their writing!

  • Some will be writing complete sentences
  • Some will be writing words
  • Some will be practicing printing letters

If you like, let me know in the comment box how it goes!

Was it easy reading the whole time? Where did you sit? Does this feel different from when we do it in class?
