Dear Parents,

Today, we worked on writing interesting questions in response to our read-aloud “Castle in the Attic” in order to practice writing provoking questions. We will do a lot of practice on our literature circle roles in order to get the students to be able to complete their responses during literature circles independently. The kids came up with really cool questions in response to the chapter and neat answers as well. Then, we worked on Lesson 4 in the textbook where it focuses on fractions of a set. e.g. 1/2 of 8, and I was telling the students that the whole number shows you how many counters to draw, the 2 shows you how many groups of equal parts you need, and the 1 shows how many groups you need to colour in, so the answer would be 4. Sorry, it is hard to explain by typing and not drawing haha 🙂 Students could also divided 8/2=4 and then multiply by 1 = the answer of 4, which is easier for some of them, but I also wanted the students to be able to visualize with the counters as well to truly understand the concept. Pages 184-185 #1-8 is homework if not done.

After DPA, the students had music until lunch.

After lunch, we read a new Indigenous story about the Origin of the Moon and students had five minutes in their groups to act out a skit. We talked about how a good skit looks and sounds like – with clear and loud voices and with acting that does not involve standing in a line and reading. Then, we worked on more on literature circle roles by reading another chapter and the students came up with four visualization pictures for that chapter. They shared their answers with the class and their drawings, which was neat to see.

At the end of the day, students worked on creating Valentine’s Day cards for their buddies 🙂
