Dear Parents,
I would like to start off by explaining the situation that happened today with the Lunch Program. Unfortunately, the regular lunch lady was away today with a substitute and the proportions of food were predicted incorrectly. The Kindergarteners got served first and a lot of the food was given out before the older kids were able to get the food and they somehow ran very low on food. Students were only able to get a small amount of food, which obviously and reasonably the kids were very upset about. I talked with the students and told them that they could go down to get granola bars from the office and kids offered to share their snacks with their friends. They seemed to be fine and I sent two students to go talk to administration. They are aware of this and Mr. Wall came and talked to the class about the issue and said that it is resolved for tomorrow and the rest of the week.
This morning, students had music and we worked on our Fractions in Sets lesson in our textbook. I used various examples on the board to show how different fractions could be used to describe different attributes of the set. The homework is pages 181-182 #1-6, but students had some time to work on it in class. We also worked on learning about Christopher Columbus – looking at why he was important, his origin story, learning about his three ships (The Pinta, Nina, and Santa Maria), drawing a portrait of him, and learning important facts about his interactions with First Nations peoples. We discussed whether Columbia had a positive or negative impact and if he actually “discovered” North America, considering First Nations people and Vikings went there first. We compared the three ships and how they looked different and drew them and also mapped Columbus’ trip and how he thought he was going to India but landed in a Caribbean island.
We also discussed our literature circle roles and how we will be eventually reading chapters of our assigned books and filling out sheets to prepare ourselves for our book discussions and taking more independence in our reading and writing activities.
After recess, we worked on our Aboriginal dot artwork, if students are not done it is due tomorrow!
There is also a spelling test on Thursday.
