Dear Parents,

This morning, I announced that we are getting a new student tomorrow! The kids were all very excited to welcome the new student to the classroom 🙂 We read more of “Castle in the Attic” and then worked on benchmark fractions on a number line. We worked out which fractions on a number line would be closer to 0, 1/2 or 1 whole. We will continue to practice modelling fractions with different materials, as students were given various materials: dominoes, tiles, counters, and cuisenaire rods in order to model different fractions. The students worked on page #179 #1-5, if it is not done, it is homework.

After, students had music and I conducted reading assessments for Term 2.

After lunch, we worked on creating pictures to visualize different parts of the Indigenous story we read yesterday, “The Raven’s Story” and drawing different parts of the story based on the story mountain: introduction, rising action, climax/peak, and resolution. Then, we divided into our Daily 5 stations.

After recess, we read a few pages in the textbook as a class outloud to learn about parts of ships as an introduction to our European Explorers unit. Each student received an explorers passport, which we will be filling out throughout the unit when we learn about various explorers e.g. Columbus, Cabot, Cartier. Students today were tasked with drawing a ship in their passports and labelling the most important parts. They were also tasked to draw a chart to organize the information they had read into four categories: food, fun, work, and clothes in order to summarize the life of a sailor. If this is not done, it is homework.

We are also still raising money for Heart & stroke foundation 🙂

Sincerely,

Ms. Wilks
