Dear Parents,

Today, we started with our Math Minute and then we started our Fractions unit of Math. I used some Math examples on the board of a pizza, chocolate bars, and brownies to show dividing into equal parts/pieces. We talked about how when there is a higher denominator number, the pieces get smaller because there are more pieces. I also used this simulator to demonstrate dividing into equal parts, up to 200! https://apps.mathlearningcenter.org/fractions/

This is another good website to explore fractions, however students need to remember that fractions must have equal parts in order to make an accurate fraction. https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/build-a-fraction/latest/build-a-fraction_en.html

We also talked briefly about equivalent fractions and also used a rubix cube to talk about the fractions that various colour combinations represented.

Students also used the iPads to play Math Playground’s Panda Pizza Game linked here: https://www.mathplayground.com/ASB_PizzaPandas.html

After, we had snack and recess.

Following recess, students had their last class to work together on their group work on various Coast Salish reading topics that they were assigned. Students generally did quite a good job working together, but we are still working on this with a variety of groups of peers.

Then, we started our Moon Unit and I presented a PowerPoint to the students while they filled in the blanks in their booklets about the phases of the Moon. We talked about eclipses, phases, lunar month cycles, and the definitions of waxing vs. waning and more. Then, we watched a couple of videos about the planets and the moon phases on Youtube.

After lunch, we had an assembly for Pink Shirt Day, had DPA, and then we worked on our optical illusion artwork.

Have a good day!

Sincerely,

Ms. Wilks
