Dear Parents,

Today, we started off with our Math pop quiz. After I mark it, I will send it to parents on Fresh Grade. This is a snapshot of your child’s progress (that will not go on their report card) so far in Math. You are highly encouraged to review this pop quiz when it is handed back to your child and to go over questions they are having trouble with in advance for the final unit test. I like giving out these diagnostic practice quizzes as it informs myself, your child, and parents of how their child is doing thus far in the unit. Please also check with your child if they are doing their textbook homework if they did not do very well on the pop quiz. I will mark them as soon as possible and post it. Sorry that it is a bit hard to read because the photocopier didn’t print very clearly but you can ask your child to bring their quiz home to see it more clearly.

After snack and recess we watched a video and talked about the physical regions of Canada. We also played a review game for mapping the provinces and territories of Canada and matching the capital cities to the provinces/territories.

Here are the links to the video and the game:

I am posting these links for practice as students will have a Provinces and Territories Mapping Quiz next week on Thursday, October 7th. They will be expected to know where each province/territory is and the matching capital city. Spelling will not count for this quiz as it is a mapping quiz, not a spelling quiz. Students are encouraged to practice for 10-15 minutes every day to get ready for this quiz next week.

After, students worked in groups on posters of each of the Physical Regions. They researched on the iPads and drew pictures of items/objects/scenery with words that represented their given physical region of Canada.

Following lunch, we worked on brainstorming our Passions and Talents for our Autobiography writing and I broke down “Hamburger” Paragraph Writing. I demonstrated how to write a topic/introductory sentence, and then how to write down two details with list words (First, secondly, next, in conclusion, etc.). Then, students were given time to write their own piece by piece. We will continue working on proper paragraph format the next time we continue our autobiographies. We also talked about adding details in our paragraphs rather than just using a simple 5-sentence structure.

After, students had DPA and extended DPA inside because they won enough class points 🙂 Yay!

At the end, we all reflected on how we could be better classmates and friends in the classroom and outside on the playground. I talked to all of the students because we are having some conflicts outside on the playground that aren’t safe or friendly. I told students that they don’t need to be best friends with everyone in the classroom, but they must be kind to everyone.

The first spelling test is on Friday – students are expected to spell the words correctly and write the meanings of each of the words. Then, we did planners and students cleaned up the classroom.

Also, a reminder that there is no school tomorrow (Thursday, September 30th) because it is Truth and Reconciliation Day.

Sorry this was so long – we had a very productive and jam-packed day!

Sincerely,

Ms. Wilks
