Happy Friday, everybody 🙂
Today, we started off with going over fractions again. I introduced how to write fractions for a set of objects. Then, I talked more about common denominators. We need to find a common denominator before we compare fractions. For example, for 4/6 vs. 5/7, to find which one is larger, we need do write out our times tables for 6 & 7 until there is a number in common e.g. 42. Then, we need to multiply the numerator by the same number as we multiplied the denominator in order to get 42.
For example:
4/6 = 4×7 out of 6* 7
= 28/42 and we do the same thing to the other fraction to get 30/42. Then, we can use >, < or = to compare the fractions. Therefore, 5/7 > 4/6
The second method I showed was to draw equal sized number lines and the last method we did together was folding pieces of paper to represent the fractions and compare them as well.
Students worked on:
G5: pages 172-173 #1-7, 10
G4: pages 181-182 #1-9
It is homework if not done.
Then, students went to Music, we had DPA, and then played benchball and dodgeball in Gym.
After lunch, we worked more on our persuasive writing about the best place to travel and we will be peer editing this next week and writing our good copies. If students were done, they also worked on the good copy of their buddy letters or on spelling.
We ended off the day with community time.
There is no weekend journal today, since the students have their Social Studies projects due and presentations on Monday. I will give them the weekend to prepare for this. The PowerPoints must be sent to me before Monday morning (preferably Sunday) so I can download them on my computer and am able to project them while they are presenting on Monday.
Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Ms. Wilks
