Hi Everyone,
Today, we started off the day with a maze as a soft start activity, it was a pretty tricky and complex one. Then, I assigned students with some questions from Show What You Know in order for them to practice some questions that will be on the upcoming test.
Grade 5: pages 114-115 #1, 2, 6, 8, 9, 13, 15-17, 20
Grade 4: pages 116-117 #1-6, 8-14
The homework is due tomorrow if not done and students should be preparing for the Math Unit Test on Wednesday and use their quiz to review.
After that, we had snack and stayed inside for DPA.
After DPA, Grade 4’s worked with me and we read a bit about light energy. Then, we experimented with a bunch of glass household items I brought from home and some prisms and we shone flashlights through in order to model refraction. It was very cool to see the rainbows that students were able to make in groups. After that, we watched some videos on how refraction works with raindrops as prisms and why the white light refracts into seven different colours that bend. We recorded some of this information down in our energy booklets. It was a lot of fun. While we were doing this, Grade 5’s worked on colouring Christmas trees for our giant Christmas tree tessellation made of a bunch of small Christmas trees.
Then, we switched and the Grade 4’s worked on the Art and I worked with the Grade 5’s in investigating inclined planes as our Simple Machine today. Then, they experimented with different inclined planes: PVC pipes, wooden planks, styrofoam, cardboard, and PLINKO boards in order to move a marble in preparation for our Rube Goldberg project as part of our compound machines project.
After lunch, we did our Daily 5 groups and then I randomly generated groups for students for their new Drama scripts & skits. They will work in groups of 5 or 6 and prepare a holiday-themed skit with a professional script – that uses the script-writing skills we worked on last class.
Have a great night!
Sincerely,
Ms. Wilks
