Hi Everyone,
Today, we started off the day with reading a Chapter of “Wonder.” After that, I went over long division with decimals on the board again step-by-step and then students worked with a randomly generated partner to practice on whiteboards.
After that, the students had their extra DPA in addition to their regular DPA for good class behaviour. Following DPA, Mrs. Chim came in to supervise the kids while they did their Daily 5 activities.
We had a French competition after Daily 5 to see which partners could come up with the most correctly spelled French words in five minutes. It was really fun 🙂
After lunch, the Grade 4’s worked on their Science projects on the computers and the Grade 5’s and I did a lesson to introduce them to our new topic of simple and compound/complex machines. We watched a Rube Goldberg video, which was really well-done as the students will be making their own Rube Goldberg machines with a compilation of simple machines. We also did a lesson on levers and experimented with creating different kinds of levers with KEVA blocks to launch/lift an object by moving the fulcrum.
At the very end of the day, I discussed nutrition labels with the kids and we looked at a bunch of different examples of nutrition labels. We talked about fruit juices vs. actual fruits and a lot about processed foods. We also looked at the ingredients of Kraft Dinner and identified that there were so many ingredients that we didn’t know the names of and were quite worried that there was “colour” and “flavour” added to these foods. Then, the students answered questions from a reading – it is homework if it is not done.
The Grade 5’s Science Project is due on Monday, just a reminder!
Have a great night!
Sincerely,
Ms. Wilks
