Hello everyone 🙂

We had such a beautiful day today with such hot and sunny weather!

Today, we started off with taking up the Math work and answering/demo’ing questions that the Grade 4’s and 5’s had about the textbook work. Then, I gave the students a Math pop quiz (doesn’t count for marks, I just wanted to see where each student was at mid-unit before the Unit Test so I know how to help support them). I will be posting an individual video on Fresh Grade of myself describing what each student did well on and areas for them to practice before the test on their individual student profile and will be taking their tests up tomorrow too.

Then, the students had Music and DPA.

After that, we did a reading and brief discussion on the Komagata Maru Incident in relation to discrimination and immigration. We talked about how it made the students feel to hear that people had been denied entry to the country simply because they had a different culture and were born in a different place. They were trapped on the ship and deprived of their basic needs. It is important to remember the low parts of Canada’s history in order to try and prevent such injustice from repeating.

After lunch, the students had time to work on their timeline and autobiography – again, this and their presentation is on Monday.

At the end of the day, we started a new Art project that the kids seemed very into! We watched a video on Andy Warhol and learned a bit about pop artwork. We also reviewed the colour wheel to use opposite colours in our pop art pieces. The students will trace an object that they draw into 8 congruent boxes on a piece of paper and use opposite colours for the object and background to make it really POP! We will be using oil pastels too 🙂

Just a reminder that the spelling test is Thursday as well! (October 1st) and students need to know spelling words and definitions.

Also, don’t forget to wear an orange shirt tomorrow!

Take care!

Sincerely,

Ms. Wilks
