Monday, September 28th

Hi Everyone,

Today, we started off with a new Math lesson. We reviewed how to reverse operations when trying to isolate a variable. For example, if I have the equation/expression of n-9=10,  we would reverse that into n = 10 + 9, because when we move the -9 over the equals sign, then instead we would + 9 because it is the reverse. It is sort of like reversing the operation to see what that variable/letter would represent in the equation. Therefore, n = 19 and we can check with 19  = 10 + 9 that this is correct because both sides are balanced.

The Grade 4’s worked on pages 20-21 #2-7 and Grade 5’s worked on pages 15-16 #1-8 and it is homework if they are not done.

Then, we had snack & DPA in the nice sunshine outside.

After DPA, we worked on answering questions for our reading about the Chinese Head Tax and talked a bit more about discrimination as part of our learning about immigration.

Then, in our table groups, we started planning making scripts for our silly split stories that we had written in the past few weeks. The students will act out these scripts, assign roles, make props/backgrounds, and really get in to the roles of their characters in  the skit.

After lunch, we read and worked on our “Future Plans and Dreams” page in our autobiography and began writing the actual text of our autobiographies that we have been working toward. The finished autobiography (either nicely printed or typed) and timeline along with the presentations will start on Monday. Students will need to be ready for this presentation.

At the very end of the day, we watched a video on Orange Shirt day and talked about discrimination and the tragic history of residential schools. We discussed how everyone is unique and different and how it is not okay to cut anyone off from their culture. Then, we decorated orange shirts to represent kindness and that every child matters. They are hung up on our front classroom window. Students are encouraged to wear an orange shirt on Wednesday, September 30th.

The spelling test is also on Thursday, October 1st this week in the morning. If students do not have the words, they need to copy off of a peer before the test.

Have a lovely evening 🙂

Sincerely,

Ms. Wilks
