Hi Everyone,

Today, we started off with our spelling words for the next week and a half. The students have 10 spelling words in their red journals and they will practice spelling the word correctly and will need to write the correct definition on the test as well. The first spelling test is on Thursday, October 1st.

Then, we worked on patterns today. We talked about patterns in multiplication charts as well as using the variable ‘n’ to figure out the value of very high figures so as to avoid using the drawing method, being able to use multiplication to help figure it out. Homework for Grades 4 & 5 are actually both the same in their respective textbooks: (pg. 8 Q#1-7) and is due tomorrow.

After, we labeled the provinces and territories and their capital cities on a Canadian map while we watched the Provinces and Territories song. Then, we did a reading on Canada and learned a bit more about the country we live in!

Right before lunch, I read some of ‘Wonder’ aloud to the class and asked the kids some discussion questions.

After lunch, we worked on our timelines. Students are asked to bring pictures for tomorrow (if they have pictures or they can draw them  instead) so we can work on our timeline good copies. Today, students brainstormed and put their events into chronological order by year in preparation for this. The timeline will go along with their autobiography that  we are working on.

At the very end of the day, I assigned the students a building project. In their table groups, they had to build a contraption that moved water at least 30 cm using recycled and other various materials with a limited amount of tape. It was great practice in collaboration and creative thinking! We tested them in front of the class after.

It was a very fun and productive day 🙂

Sincerely,

Ms. Wilks
