Dear Parents,
Today, we read more of “Castle in the Attic” – then we explored modelling fractions with cuisenaire rods. Some of the models they made with these rods to symbolize fractions was really neat. I believe that manipulatives and hands-on activities work to expand the learning in relation to fractions. We also read an Indigenous story today called “Weasel Trap” which was a story about why it is important not to lie. We mapped out the story on our story plots in preparation to write our own myths in the end and as part of our indigenous stories unit.
For the rest of the day, we had “Destination Imagination” come in and do a workshop with the kids. The point of the program is for kids to work on their critical and creative thinking as well as collaborate with group members to solve various hands-on challenges. The first challenge was for students to work together to stack cups into a pyramid using an elastic-string contraption. They also had a challenge with paper clips and various “lost” items. It was very cool to see and I will post some of my videos on Fresh Grade!
I won’t be here tomorrow as I will be at a workshop.
Have a wonderful weekend!
