Dear Parents,

Welcome back to school and happy 2020!!!! I was so happy to see so many photos of Winter Break – it looks like all the kids had so much fun during the break!

This morning, the students had Music. We did an introductory/refresher lesson for our new topic of money and students for this unit will create their own shop and sell things with fake money. I am very excited for this activity 🙂

We worked on our Winter Break writing as well – students are expected to have 5 photos printed out from Winter Break and will write a paragraph of at least 5 sentences each for each picture. Students will present their writing next week on Monday. We went over tips for a good oral presentation including volume, clarity, enunciation, and showing the visuals to the audience.

After lunch, we worked on reviewing connections and the three types of connections: text to self, text to text, and text to world and we brainstormed some examples of each with some of the books that we have in the classroom and are reading. Then, we broke up into our Daily 5 groups. At the very end of the day, we worked on our Group of 7 artwork and started our totem pole artwork by choosing animals that symbolize our personalities and character traits.

We got our new spelling words – to increase accountability, I am no longer posting spelling words on Fresh Grade. Students need to be responsible for their own words and if they are away, they know they can copy the words off of a friend/peer. Our spelling test is going to be a week from Thursday.

I am also collecting report card envelopes, please return signed as soon as possible!

I have also posted the January newsletter with upcoming learning topics and dates 🙂

Sincerely,

Ms. Wilks
