Today, we worked on identifying what the > , < , and = mean and how to use them to compare larger and smaller numbers. When we use the > symbol, the larger number goes on the side with the larger opening (e.g. I say it looks like a crocodile mouth, and the crocodile is so hungry it eats the larger number, so 10 > 4 for example or 5 < 100, 5 = 5 (equal values) would also be correct or 4 + 1 = 3 + 2 but we didn’t look too much into that last one). We also worked more on place value and differentiating the ten thousands, thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones categories and went over rounding to the nearest hundred by plotting it on a number line as well. The homework is pages 40-41 #2-7, 9-12 due tomorrow.
If students want to participate in the spooky writing contest, it is due on October 25th to Ms. Zimmerschied.
We had a bench ball tournament in which we will determine our final winners in a future Gym class. In gym, we also worked on bumping the ball over the net to our partners and then we had a volleyball relay.
We worked on differentiating proper vs. common nouns. We reviewed that a noun is a person, place, or thing, but that they can be divided into the two types of nouns. A proper noun is the name of a specific thing/person/place, but a common name could refer more generally to something (e.g. Proper = Tim Hortons since it is a specific name of a place and it is upper case. Common could be referring to a place as “a restaurant” and it is lower case because it is not a specific name.
We also talked about mental health and did a True and False activity to understand a bit more about stigma. Finally, we did a card sort of different jobs in the feudal system as part of our exploration into medieval times.
