🧡 Everyone Matters 🧡

Orange Shirt Day is recognized annually on September 30th, in recognition of the harm the residential school system did to children’s sense of self-esteem and well being, and as an affirmation of our commitment to ensure that everyone around us matters.

Division 8 students met with their little buddies in Division 15 and traced their hands, then wrote in the hand something they can do to help others feel like they matter.
Click on the photos above for a closer look.

Cross Country Intramurals 2018

Nelson students in grades 3, 4, 5, 6, & 7 participated in our annual Cross Country competition.
Students ran around the whole block, ending with a sprint towards the finish line at our playground.
Division 8 had lots of fun racing for the 1st time against other grade 3s and all did an awesome job!

BOOK LOVE

Ohmigoodness! Division 8 has been completely spoiled with new books. Thank you SO much to Marcus,
Alexandra, Shimer, Casandra, Julia, Iris, Kayla, Ella S and Mrs. Roberts for your incredibly generous gifts!
We will enjoy these books all year long.

Orange Shirt Day

Orange Shirt Day is an event that started in 2013.
It was designed to educate people and promote awareness about the Indian residential school system and the impact this system had on Indigenous communities for more than a century in Canada.
The date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools.
Division 8 students participated in Orange Shirt Day in a couple different ways today. First, we met our little buddies in Miss Tsakalos’ class and created art around what we can do to help others feel like they matter at Nelson School.
In the afternoon, we took part in an assembly led by Mrs. Little which included singing songs and viewing videos which taught us more about Indigenous culture and the history behind this special day.

Nelson students, what was your favourite part of the day and how will you ensure that other students at school always feel like they matter, they are cared for and they are important?
