Orange Shirt Day 2024

Orange Shirt Day is an event that started in 2013.
It was designed to educate people and promote awareness about the Indian residential school system and the impact this system had on Indigenous communities for more than a century in Canada.
The date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools.
On Friday, Division 9 participated in a beautiful assembly where students from our class helped present a territorial acknowledgement.
On Tuesday we will continue our learning by speaking about the story Shi-shi-etko that was read during the assembly. In the story, Shi-shi-etko collected “memories” for her memory bag in order to remember her home, her land and her family. Students will be asked to imagine having their own memory bag to store things that help them remember their home. They will draw and label these items and explain why these items are special to them.

Thank you to all the students who took a chance and created a question to our 1st Think Math answer:
The answer is 200 kids raising money for Terry Fox.
100 kids from Nelson donate. 25 kids from South Slope. 75 other people donate. How many people donate in all? ~ Crystal

Here’s this week’s answer! Good Luck Grade 3s! Remember there are as many different correct answers as there are students in our class! I can’t wait to share more answers next Monday!

TERRY FOX RUN 2024

Nelson students participated in our annual Terry Fox Run on Friday. Sept. 13th. After one week of fundraising, bringing in Toonies for Terry and donating online, we raised a great amount of money for the Terry Fox Foundation! Way to go Nelson!!
We have participated in the Terry Fox Run for 34 years and as of last year have a fundraising grand total of $43, 597.19!!
Nelson students will find out what their fundraising total this year is soon and will be rewarded for all their hard work!
