Orange Shirt Day 2023

Orange Shirt Day is an event that started in 2013.
It was designed to educate people and promote awareness about the Indian residential school system and the impact this system had on Indigenous communities for more than a century in Canada.
The date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools.
This week, Division 9 students participated in Orange Shirt Day in a couple different ways. We. tried to put ourselves in the shoes of Phyllis Webstad and created art based on what t-shirt we would want to wear on the 1st day of school and discussed how it would feel if it was taken away. Today, a beautiful assembly was presented by Ms. Boyes and Nelson’s Indigenous Cmte. We ended with saying “Huy ch q’u” (“Hi-ch-ka,” giving of thanks, with our hands held in front at heart leave with palms open and facing upwards).

Nelson students, what was your favourite part of the day and how will you ensure that other students at school always feel like they matter, they are cared for and they are important?

Number of the Week

Each week 3-4 clues to a number are posted both in the classroom and on this website. Clues to a new number will be posted each week on Friday morning. You will have the opportunity to submit your answer in our classroom before Monday’s Calendar time. One correct answer will be pulled out of a hat for a prize and then we’ll work together on additional math activities in the classroom based on the number.
Good luck Grade Twos & Threes!!

🇨🇦 Where Am I? 🇨🇦

Where Am I? is a weekly Canadian geography question that will posted in our classroom and on our website. Questions will be posted on Monday mornings, students can submit answers during the week and a name will be drawn to win a prize on Friday mornings after Calendar. Check out next week’s Where Am I? by clicking on the WHERE AM I? tab above!
Good luck Division 9!
